Facebook groups

I’m a member of a few FB groups related to quilting and related subjects. When I finish a quilt, I often post in one or more of those groups in addition to posting here. But no more. I had seen a few quilts more than once, but didn’t think anything of it because I’m in more than one group and I figured other people may also be in several groups and post their pics in them. But a few weeks ago, I saw a post of one of my quilts that my daughter had held up for me, taken in my sewing room, but the poster was not me. They had modified the face just a bit, and claimed their daughter had made the quilt. They said it had mistakes in it but that was just evidence if small hands learning the craft or some nonsense. While I’m grateful that they modified my daughter’s face to make it less recognizable, it really set me off that they had lifted my picture, taken credit for my work, and manufactured such a story just to get clicks.

I realize that when you post a picture online, you offer it up for anybody to copy. I know people on this board have had their pictures lifted and other people have taken credit for their work. I shouldn’t be so worked up over it, but here I am. So from now on I will look and admire and ask questions or make comments, but I will not be posting my pictures on any of those groups. And that’s kind of sad. I like that other people enjoy my work and offer encouragement. So now the task falls to all of you to keep me quilting. 🤣.

Have any of you had this happen? Do you still post your quilts on FB? Is this just the price we pay to show off our work and share our love of this craft?

So sorry this happened, and I would be upset too, especially if a family member was in the picture. Unfortunately a picture could as easily be copied from here as from Facebook, and I hope that doesn't keep anyone from posting here.

I report the post because it happend to me a few times on Facebook. I also message the poster and tell her what I think about 'her quilt' and that she has been reported. A friend or two always post hey that's not your quilt, they know it's mine. Most of the group will block that person and post that she is a thief. Then I forget it and go on with my day.

I also can't stand the posts "My grandma made this quilt but she thinks no one likes it" - just fishing for likes. So much on FB is fake.

Sorry it happened to you. So far it hasn't happened to me. But if it ever does, that is just telling me that my quilt must be good enough for someone to say it's theirs. Still it's not right to steal someone else's thunder.

I've had pics copied from forums and someone else taking credit. It's very annoying, but I guess it's to be expected. FB seems to be worse. I guess there's a reason people call it Fakebook.

I stay away from Facebook. I really dislike that place. But to answer your question- no I haven't had that happen to me while I was active. I'm sorry that happened to you. It feels very violating to me.

Just on the one that is “Public”, even though scammers can still get through on the “Private” ones. I removed my photo and post from that site, but still visit it, as there is lots of good info to sift through. I know Pat Sloan has recently gotten stricter and amalgamated her groups to try and control the spam easier. Posts are being declined if someone posts a photo asking if anyone knows the pattern name, it was getting ridiculous. And yes it is sad that the good intentions of sharing can be spoiled by just a few rotten eggs! Even if you put a watermark on the photo, some scammers are sharing it and “pretending” it is theirs 👿

I have had one of my original art quilts lifted from FB and sold as t shirts, quilts and pillows on Etsy. My friend was shopping and noticed it. I immediately brought it to Etsy's attention and they asked ME to prove it was my work! I sent pics of it in progress and they removed the listings. Pirates.

You have provided a good reminder about posting pictures online. I was thinking that I don't post pictures of my quilts into groups, but then realized that I do post pictures of my quilts on my own profile. I like to share my creations with family and friends, however have been thinking lately that I should take some time to go through my privacy settings. Your post may just prompt me into action.
