How many of you out there get really excited about making a quilt, get the fabric, cut it, sew it into your quilt and then wonder what to use for backing? I seem to have trouble remembering to buy the backing fabric when I buy the fabric for a quilt top, and then when I go to do the backing the "wind is taken out of my sails" so to speak because I don't have a clue about the backing. Does this happen to anyone else?

I rarely buy the back when I buy fabric for the front. I have found that I tend to change my mind about borders/binding colors and wait to decide those before buying the back. I usually buy less expensive fabric for the back than I do for the front, and only try to coordinate, rather than perfectly match to the front. I generally don't flip them over, but prefer a print to plain muslin.

in the majority of my quilts i use 90" or 120" muslin for backings, works for me. On baby and lap quilts i sometimes co-ordinate the backing fabric instead of using muslin.

I usually buy "backing" fabric when it is at a super sale price and stash it. Then I "SHOP" for my backing when my top is done in my own stash. I use to buy backings for quilts and almost always ended up using something else, so for me this works.

I decide on my backing when the top is done. Sometimes, I have something in my stash that works, other times, I go shopping for backing fabric.

Recently, I started to incorporate a little back art into my quilts.

I usually look for backings in the sale aisle.

I almost always use plain muslin. It's inexpensive and goes with everything. I figure the top is what everyone will be looking at.

In the past I have bought backing by the bolt, so usually had it on hand. One bolt of white on white and one of white on natural. I'm out now, so will have to decide if I want to do something else from now on since I don't make enough quilts to be able to buy by the bolt.

I usually buy it when I get the quilt fabric otherwise I put it off and never get the quilt done.

I usually decide on the backing when the quilt top is finished. Once in a while I find something that really complements the quilt top and will go ahead and buy it, although that is rare.

I usually piece my backings. Even if I need to buy backing it is not hard for me to find something available that I like.
