Hi everyone,
I am making a raggy quilt that is 80" by 80". Finished squares are 5", so it is 16 squares long by 16 squares wide - 256 squares total.

The tutorial I am following says to quilt each square individually, making the "sandwich" one at a time, and then sew them all together to form the quilt.

I think what I'd rather do is sew 4 - 40" (finished) squares together to form the back (with traditional seams, not raggy seams) and then sew the front to the back and quilt it that way.

Do you think this is possible? Will it work? If it makes any difference, I am using flannel with warm 'n' natural in the middle, and the back, if I do it this way, will be cream colored flannel.

I appreciate any insight! I just do not feel like cutting 256 squares of backing fabric, and 256 squares of warm 'n' natural. It seems a solid back would look better too.

The one thing that I see happening if you do it this way is that you will only have one layer of fringe (your top layer). If you want a more fringed effect you need to have your backing fringed on the top as well and for even more fringing I have used flannel as my middle layer too and brought all three layers to the front to snip and therefore fringe

As MAmabear said, you will have fuller raggy borders if both front and back are included and ragged. Also, you will have to match the seams in the front and back, otherwise you may have a seam that is a litle off. furthermore, the quilt goes a lot quicker. Once you finish sewing all the squares together and clip, the quilt is done.
