A couple of quilters were tossing their scraps - and some other quilters were saying/asking - could they have them?

If you are among those that can/will use scraps - what is the smallest size scrap that is usable?

I saw some miniature quilts at Paducah - and they had pieces that looked like they were about 1/2 inch square (before sewing) -

I saw someone say they could use scraps as narrow as 1/2 inch???

Just wondering -

The suggestion to toss scraps into a priority mail box is a good one - just wondering about the size of scraps - I would be less than thrilled to get a bunch of snippets

I am fabric needy and cant afford to buy. so I would use 1/2 inch fabric. I like to applique so I use some pretty small pieces.

My quilting friends supply my stash from their scraps. Sizes range from 1" upwards.

If anyone lives in the Burlington, VT area and want small scraps, I have a GIGANTIC bag of them! I will never use them, but can't bring myself to trash them.

I have used down to 1/2" but I prefer to use from 3/4" and up. the 1/2" is possible if you use 1/8" seams.

This is a great topic...maybe get a list of members size wishes and whether or not they would be willing to pay the postage for a box of them :D:D:D

Quilters are so resourceful! I think we were the original "green" people. I love that even the scraps and selvages (which I love) don't go to waste.

And for those on a budget, don't forget about old clothing. Bonnie Hunter has a wonderful book: http://quiltville.com/scrapsandshirttailspreview.shtml and she uses old cotton clothing which she gets from her closet or thrift stores. Her quilts are gorgeous and made with stuff you would normally throw out or donate.

I was just with some friends on Thursday piecing my scrappy quilt. I had four grocery bags (plastic ones) full of scraps - they thought I was strange for keeping such small scraps - BUT I'm the only one of us who has not had to go out and buy fabric to finish my scrappy quilt :). I keep all small piecs up to 1" wide. I have begun saving my SCRAPS in a Mason jar - I will use it as a decoration in my sewing room when it is full - very colorful. Small, small, small bits of fabric (like those teeny tiny triangles cut off hsq triangles after they are sewn together) and the slight pieces cut off during squaring up!! I save so many of my 'scraps' - I mean I paid for it - why not use it - in a scrap pattern sometime!!

I make all my mini's out of Civil War fabric but don't save any of my scraps from my large quilts, tablerunners, etc so if someone would like me to save them just send me a pm.
