I really like this quilt but am not good at figuring out how much fabric I need for each fabric. Can anyone help? The pattern only lists what is needed for one block.
Thank you. http://quilting.about.com/od/blockof...ning_stars.htm |
First you have to tell us how big your quilt will be. Baby? Twin? Full? Queen? King?

Simply decide how many blocks you want your quilt to have and plug the number, shape and size of the pieces into this handy yardage calculator. Easy as pie. http://vrya.net/quilt/classic.php

Personally I'd get 2 to 3 yards of each color and have the leftovers for my stash.

I figure how many square inches of each fabric it takes for one block. Then how many blocks I will make. 44 inch fabric I count as 42 allowing for selvages. 42 x 36 is 1,512 square inches is a yard. So anything less than that and you can get a yard and be comfortable.

Thank you! I love that site and it is exactly what I was hoping exists! I usually do just overbuy so I can contribute to my stash. I was hoping to use some of that stash for this quilt and couldn't figure out how to make it work.
I'm actually thinking that this will be a scrap quilt and let the pinwheels be two different colors and let the background be the scraps, probably medium shades or whitish/lightish and let the pinwheels be red and black or dark pink and black. Or red and navy blue. Or maybe even green and black. Or.... :-) Thank so much! I love all the tips!! |
I always buy extra for my stash.
