newbie quilter 07-23-2010 08:38 AM

Hi, I am the newbie quilter. I know how to sew, but not how to quilt. i have a hard time learning how to cut blocks and strips. But, I will eventually get it. Besides, this is just to say hello everybody. So, hello.

Just take your time, and it will get easier! I always iron my fabric before i cut it. Try buying a small kit, or start with squares and sew them together.
Welcome from Texas!

Welcome from Massachusetts.

There are many pre cut cuts that are easy to do. If you are close to Joanns they always have a block of the month going on. You can also find kits at online quilt shops.

Keep looking around the board. Statret with something small so you do not overwhelm yourself and you'll be a pro pretty quick.

I myself am pretty new to the quilting world, and have received wonderful advice from other more experienced quilters. On that note, I would suggest going to the local quilt shop or even google the local quilt groups and get into one of those- they are a wonderful asset to the beginning quilter. And, make sure you have a good rotary cutter (65mm and a 45mm are good, Olfa and Fiskars), a large cutting mat, and a clear 36" length quilter's ruler for cutting. Also, if you do lots of quilting, you will need to have plenty of rotary blades, as they tend to get dull if you cut a lot. I do a ton of cutting, and have to have a stash as a result. Let me know what specifically you need to know in terms of cutting, I may be able to pass on some of the good advice given to me. :0)
