Yesterday I started really taking stock of all the fabric I own. I realized that at the rate I am using up fabric, I will be about 200 before I use up my stash. I have decided that I am now on a fabric fast. I am going to concentrate on using the fabric I own instead of running out to the store or jumping on-line for more. I think the fun of planning what I can do with new fabric has gotten out of hand.

I figure I have at least 2000 yards of fabric that is organized right now, not counting all the fabric still left to organize. (Probably at least another couple hundred yards.)

How many others suffer from a stash they cannot use up?

Me!!! I have 4 bins of fabric, and 3 bins of planned projects. no more shopping until two of those planned bins are emptied. I will allow thread, binding, and batting -- but I have enough for quite a while!

I can relate to that! I was living overseas for 20 years where we had no fabric shops, and the only way I could get fabric was when we planned a trip to the U.S. and boy, would I load up!! Most of the time, it was buying without a specific project in mind. MOST of the quilts I made (neighborhood of about 25-30) were made from my stash. I did, however, buy backing and white/natural muslin by the bolt, but everything else ranging from FQ's to 5 yards. I was surprised at how a limited selection forced me to choose patterns to accomodate fabs I had on hand. There were frustrations, though. Many times I chose a pattern (from the 200+ mags and books I have), got all excited, and found a key piece I needed was 1/2 yd short!! On the plus side, I tried many different styles of piecing and applique and really loved it all! In my case, I didn't have a choice-but living here where you can get fabric "on tap" at numerous shops, you'll have to be strict with yourself to NOT be tempted to just go out and buy more!! I get too tempted living here by the sales and coupons available!! Good luck-it CAN be done with great results!!

Sometimes for me the thrill is in the buying rather then the making. I like you have decided to make something wonderful with what I have. Not hard for me cause I love scrappy quilts!

Me too! I have been adding to the stash since I started quilting. I now have tubs in two closets and more under the pool table (that is not used for pool but works great for sandwiching a quilt after hubby added plywood to the top of the table). I have even gone through the tubs and donated to my local guild. Looks like I need to donate again!

Is that all? LOL

that's exactly why i just gave away bags and bags of fabrics. I won't live long enough to use it all. nor have the energy. as it is, i've slowed down a lot!
