Acouple of weeks ago I joined this quilting board. Many of you welcomed me and I really appreciate the many welcomes that you all gave.

At that time I also mentioned that I was a beginner quilter and was taking a class at my local Hancock store. Well I had my class yesterday and it was very disappointing. We were handed instructions for a table runner project, and told to ask for help if we needed it. Some class.....NOT!!! It was not a quilting class, more of a craft project to pay for something that could have been done on our own.

The caution I give all - ask more questions about content when you see an offer for a beginning quilting class and what you are actually supposed to learn and the content.

I am seriously considering asking for my money back. Oh and by the way - this was a SMALL room, probably 12 x 20 with 6 women, 3 tables, 2 people per table, CROWDED , we were elbow to elbow, tripping over one another and the store owner was also using it as a storage room which there were boxes stacked along 3 of the walls.

Needless to say - it was the pits and I learned nothing!! Uh yeah just wasted $35.00 for nothing on a project I could have probably done at home by following printed instructions.

For the beginners out there such as myself - insure you ask detailed questions about the content of a class so you don't waste your money and time. :(

Um, if it were me I would complain and ask for at least a partial refund if they supplied the supplies. That is NOT a class. Any one of us can pick up a pattern (free or purchased) and muddle through. I'm sorry you had that experience. :(

I would ask for my money back too.

You can learn so much from these wonderful people here just ask.

How disappointing. I definitely think you are due at least a partial refund if they supplied the materials, a full refund if you also had to buy materials. It is false advertising to call that a class.

WOW! $35 for one class? that is high. My LQS charges $12. You might check to see if there is one near that would have a class going. My store has Block of the Month quilts going that are for beginning quilters and you start anytime of the year and are taught different techniques each class.

So sorry you had this experience. Definitely ask for your money back, that was NOT a lesson.

That's awful! I would complain. If you don't get any response or a bad one I would move up the chain of command and go to a district manager or corporate...I hope you keep us posted on what happens

ha,i went to one on different feet for my machine. we all brought our machines. sat there listening to the lady "talk" about feet until the last five minutes of class, then we got to try out one foot on our machines! I never took another class there.

I have learned more from fellow quilters and from just trying it on my own than I ever learned from a class. That is why I rarely go to one. I do believe a LQS would give you a better beginner class than a chain store. Most chain stores do not worry about return business like a LQS does. If you have a good experience at a LQS, you are much more likely to sign up for more classes and purchase fabric from them, so they work harder to make sure your experience is a good one.

Yeah, I'd be asking for a refund, too!!!! I once took a painting class at a Ben Franklin. During the 2nd class I realized I was teaching more than the teacher. She was off in a corner painting her own project. A woman was told to spray brown paint on her statue and then wipe it off to antique it. The teacher wasn't paying attention and the woman didn't realize you had to wipe it off immediately....and let the paint dry. Her 4 weeks of hard work went down the drain. I not only asked for my money back, but so did 10 of the 12 women. We complained to the store manager....but got nowhere. Next time I was in the store, I heard a woman asking about the classes. I piped up and told her she wouldn't be happy, they don't teach, they just take your money. LOL BOY, the store clerk was mad!

On edit: I just had another thought. I've learned a lot here in this forum, too. Using the tutorials has been very educational. Also, I go out to YouTube and put in queries...like "quilt", or "sewing"....they're a TON of stuff out there for free!!!

I took the Lewis and Clark quilt block packets. HaHa for help. Spent fortune on material to mke it and that is all I got. I'ts still in drawer.
