What are Wing Needles? And what size thread would you use with them?

I may be wrong??
But I think they are for making decorative stitches.
they make a larger hole in the fabric.
Used them once to make decorative stitching around some napkins. I think I used a heavier wt thread.
gave them a nice hand embroidered look

Use these needles for hemstitching and for creating French Hand Sewn garments by machine. Side wings create a hole in loosely woven fabric that resembles entredeux, Double wing has one wing needle and one universal needle. The single wing needle is sold in size 100 and 120.

Hemstitching is found on commercial pillow cases. It is the little decoration found at the hem.

They can also be used to attach lace - basically they are an Heirloom Sewing needle - used with batiste (very lightweight - like handkerchief) weight fabric. There are designated decorative stitched that allow the hole they make to be enhanced.

Those lovely Christening dresses and shirred or pin tucked (old fashioned style) baby dresses, etc
