Does anyone know anything about a Singer Feathwerweight Sewing Machine with a Black/Silver case? I don't have the serial number but I may be able to purchase. Is it a Featherweight and anyone know the approximate age? Thanks so much!

I have several featherweights, all black featherweight machines have plain little black cases. The easiest way to tell a featherweight machine is that the left side of the table folds up to allow it to be put in the case.
They are much smaller and only weigh 11 lbs. Easy to insert in case and carry. Ruth

When I first looked there was no pic, now I see it---YES it definitely is a featherweight. May be a reproduction case as it looks so shiney , looks great. I think you should check the cord as it has been replaced, safety , you know. Go for it, good luck. Ruth

It is a featherweight, I have not run across a speckled carrying case before, but I must say it looks in great condition. You cannot tell the year of the machine unless you get the serial number from the base.

I agree, the machine is definitely a Featherweight, but the box is either a reproduction, or perhaps the original has been recovered.

I just got another featherweight. Love them all. It definitely looks like one to me. You can get the serial number from the bottom to date it. As for the case, I've never seen one like it. It's either been redone or is a reproduction.

You can find out all the infromation you want about them and other vintage machines in the Vintage Sewing Machine Shop moderated by Billy. He's our resident "know-it-all" about vintage machines. Charlee is another that has the knowledge. I'm sure there are others, but they are the only two I can think of right now.

Definitely looks like a Featherweight, but you really need to check the serial number on the base of the machine... on the bottom, straight back from the needle, number stamped into an oblong section. Then go to http://www.singer-featherweight.com/, check your approximate birthdate, etc. If it's supposed to be 60 years old or so there should be some marks of wear and tear on its bed from all the fabric that's gone through. (unless someone REALLY didn't sew much)

That foot pedal looks slightly flatter than the original ones. Could just be the angle of the picture? The original foot pedals made of black Bakelite did have the two buttons, only one of which went up and down. Replacement foot pedals were made of medal and look much like a car's gas pedal.

That case is not original. There's virually no wear and tear on it.... Also, the originals were black inside and out and the clasps were totally different. They folded down to snap and had a round button to release them. They were silvery, not gold. And the carry handle was covered with black leather. Granted, the case may be a replacement because the original wore out.

Several years ago there were quite a few reproductions sold as Featherweights, for about $400. The ones from Japan were made from the original Singer molds (sold to them and re-cast), used high quality metal, and are excellent machines. Some very nasty reproductions came from India and were a mess.

How does it stitch? ....sound? How much does it weigh?

Have you checked it out yet? Inquiring minds want to know. What did you find out about it? What year was it born? Is it a reproduction?

It's a featherweight, and it was made in 1951. You can tell the year from the badge on the front of the machine...it has a blue ring that was exclusive to the "Centenial" models...Singer's centenial was 1851-1951. I can't tell you anything about the case, but it's nice, and I wouldn't think matters much as long as the machine fits comfortably in it.
Looks like it's had some rewiring done (the white cord). Depending on what they want for it, I'd buy it.
