a friend of a friend wants me to make 3 quilts out of the feed sacks her husbands mother left when she past. to give to the 2 kids when they are older she is coming over today to talk about it. i don't know what to charge? it seams that 300.00 times 3 is a lot of money help me!!!!

Do you WANT to make them?

Maybe you can teach her how to make them?

It is a lot - but if you value your time?

Does this person work outside her home? Do you have any idea how much she makes per hour?

Make sure you discuss WHY this would cost this much with the person.

When people see ads for "any size quilt for $39 or $49 or $59 dollars" - that's the price many of them have in mind - and if they supply the fabrics - hey - you should pay THEM for the privilege of working with them.

The fact that there are 3 quilts doesn't mean they should be discounted. There's a lot of work that goes into quilts - we all know that! And is the $300 just for the tops? If you're quilting these too, depending on the sizes, this may be too cheap.

If you don't value your time and expertise, other people might not either. Don't be afraid to charge a fair price. If she doesn't like it, too bad, she can see if someone else will do it for less.

How much is your time worth? Can you estimate how many hours you will need to put into each quilt? Divide the price by the number of hours, and you may be amazed at how you are undervaluing your time. Workers at McDuck's accummulate this much money simply by working regular, steady hours at minimum wage. Quilts require skills that many people do not have, so even minimum wage is really too little per hour.

i think thats a very fair price - 3 quilts is a lot of work

The going rate rule of thumb now is 5 x the cost of supplies. If they have some of the fabric like tee shirts I'd charge per shirt. I think $20 per shirt is what some guild members are charging for a simple tee shirt quilt.

the 3 quilts are from the top to quilting them so i will charge 15.00 for the batting and the backing im not sure what she wants i may have her buy that herself

What is she providing other than the feedsacks? That will make a difference, as well.

Just cause you wouldn't pay it doesn't mean someone else wouldn't! You are so worth it.
