I bought a Singer 401A! This is the model I learned to sew on when I was very young. When I was in my 30's my mom traded it in on a fancy new machine, and I was heartbroken. I loved that Singer. It needs work, and it doesn't have any accessories but that can be fixed. I feel like a kid again lol. Then today I went to a quilting rummage sale with another board member and bought a couple dozen magazines, 3 books and several yards of fabric for about $12! I am a happy camper.

Every time I look at the machine, I can just see my mom sitting at the machine making clothes for all of us.

I have the same machine with the cabinet (now), and I prefer to use the knee lever for sewing (it has the foot pedal too)..... This machine is beyond awesome. Last week I made 4 vinyl mini skirts with fur trim on the hems and it sewed beautifully through the vinyl. The beginning of the week, I had to design a Barbie Fashion Fairytale dress for a little girl (it was mainly organza and jersey fabric) and the machine did beautiful work. The moms and the girls (clients) loved their costumes (vinyl skirts & Barbie dress). Last night I finished up a crumb quilt top, and the work is unbelievable .....(everyday/night I do some type of sewing with my machine)...
Congratulations on your great find, I would definitely get the machine cleaned and oiled. (You don't have to worry on belt replacements and computer chips freezing up on you), IMHO, these machines are easier to maintain and use than whats current today.

You got some nice things hold on to that machine.

This one didn't have the cabinet, or any accessories but I can work on that. It does run, but I want to clean it up before I try to sew anything.
