Over the years, I've made a lot of quilts as donations to my children's schools and other charities. The quilts are used as raffle prizes or auction items at fundraising events. But these donations can be frustrating, too, because they often raise less money than I think they could if they had a bigger audience.

I was excited to find out yesterday that eBay offers a way to auction your quilts online and automatically donate some or all of the proceeds to a nonprofit organization.

I thought some of you might be interested in the article I just wrote about how quilters can use eBay's Giving Works program. I'm getting my daughters' schools to sign up so I can sell some quilts for them online. (BTW, I'm not connected to eBay in any way.)

You can do that, but the charity must be federally recognized, not just a local non-profit. We have a small dog rescue and frequently sell/auction/raffle my quilts, but we can't use eBay to do it until we are a 501 (c) 3, which we are working on now!

Does this work internationally? Or do the charities have to be USA based?

While this is a great way to support your charity, Ebay isn't usually the first place people turn to for crafted goods.

If your goal is to make good money, I would try etsy (or other crafter friendly avenue) for your handmade goods.

And what percentage of the selling price does eBay take?

the other part of this from what i read is that you cannot raffle it...it is an outright sale, so you decide how much of the sale price goes to the charity and ebay takes its cut, depending on your generosity. I guess if you think a direct sale is going to generate more money than the raffle, it might be ok...would be interested to hear from others that have tried it..
