As you can see from my profile, I am from Canada and will be spending some time this winter in Florida. We stay in an R.V.
park near Weston, Fort Lauderale and I am interested in knowing where to find good fabric shops (other than just Hancocks/Joanne's. I am told I should stock up on fabric because it is much more reasonable and much more to choose from in the U.S. Thanks to all who can help.

Once Upon a Quilt is great.

http://www.onceuponaquilt.com is on Griffin Road, between 95 & the Turnpike (but check with a local on directions because it might be easier to go on local roads from Weston).

Going south, the only quilt shop is all the way down in Miami:

Heading North:

The quilt shop in Coral Springs (Jamie's) recently closed.

Sunshine Sewing in Margate is the largest shop in SoFla (over 8000 bolts). It's a quick ride up the turnpike for you.

If you want to travel a bit further north, there are a few shops:
West Palm Beach
http://www.MyQuiltshoppeFl.com (Okeechobee Road/Jog Road)
http://www.ButtonwoodQuilts.com (10thAve/JogRoad)

And even further north:
Jupiter
Quilters Choice (Indiantown Road/Maplewood)

Stuart
http://www.JamPatch.com

You can pretty much find a Joann's every 15/20 minutes regardless of where you're going.

Like many shops all over the country, some seem to be rather "lacking" in inventory these days.

Sunshine has the best selection, but I also really enjoy The Jam Patch (also an easy ride up the turnpike). Both have a good and constant stream of new fabric.

I hope those links work for you.

Enjoy your stay in SoFla.

thanks SO much! When we go and visit my DH and I generally just wander during the day because my son is working...this will be nice!

I don't know when you plan on visiting, but "Southern" Florida (east and west coasts) holds most of its quilt shows/events from January to April.

Here's a list of events for most of Florida for 2011.

Enjoy!

Thanks soooooo much to all who answered my posting. I am sure I will be able to find these shops and will enjoy what I find. I apologize for taking so long to acknowledge your responses but I am still trying to find my way around this site and came across these answers to my question by accident. Obviously, I am not a "techie person". Have enough trouble trying to use my Janome embroidery machine. Thanks again everyone.

Look online for shops along your driving route. Here in Gastonia, NC we have Mary Jo's just off I-85 exit 21. It's not a LQS but a huge fabric/notions/dream sewing room and they always have a great selection and prices....I realize this sounds like an ad for Mary Jo's, but I have been in her store for most of my 40 years and it really is a great place...you can even ask about drop shipping to your home/rv.

Just trying to make your long drive more fun. Have a Merry Christmas and wonderful winter in FL.

Not trying to go OT but:

I have diverted/hijacked many a north/south trip just so we would pass by MaryJo's. I have also ordered many times from them, even before they had an official online shop.

Just don't go in expecting a LQS atmosphere. The place is stuck in the 1960's (linoleum, panelling,etc.). Very clean but a dump. But that's why they can charge the prices they do. It's an experience.
