I want to get started on DD's SB Sue quilt. I have the book by Eleanor Burns and she says to use iron on interfacing. What is the best kind to use? And what would happen if you don't use interfacing? And do you have to iron the edges under or can I just blanket stitch them?

I have never done appique before.

I use many different weights of interfacing depending on the feel/look that I want. If you don't use interfacing, it will be "limp" but that is okay if you like that look. Yes you can use a blanket stitch around them. A lot of this is just personal preference.

Applique is fun!! You can use an iron on interfacing, make sure that it is a light weight, or it will remain rigid. Or you can use a glue stick, just dab it on. I like to use a satin stitch or a narrow zigzag stick to go around the edge. Blanket stitch looks pretty too!

I use Heat and Bond LITE- sewable and then just blanket stitch them down- I don't turn the edges under :wink:

That's the stuff that I use, just make sure that you buy the LITE!! :wink:

I too use Lite Heat and Bond...or WonderWeb both can be bought by the yd at Joann's or in a package. Then you don't have to worry abt turning under and jsut blanket stitch or decorative stitch around each...

Same here. Applique can be so fun. Enjoy.

it's a light weight fusible interfacing. has tiny bumps on the fusible side. you lay the fusible side on the front of the fabric with the drawn pattern on the smooth side. stitch on the drawn lines and snip an area to turn it right side out (if necessary to snip). this turning places the bumpy side of the fusible on the back now and all the raw edges are inside. fuse to your background fabric and stitch in place. i did blanket stitches.

I use "used dryer sheets" as my backing, sew on machine around all edges
and then cut a slit in dryer sheet, turn each piece (bonnet, arm, shoe, dress, etc)
and after pressing, you can cut away excess sheet on back. All your edges
are nicely finished, and ready to hand or machine applique onto the background square.
