I ordered the Microwave Potato Baking bag supplies from Keepsake Quilting. I made the micorwave baking potato bags for Christmas gifts. The potato fabric was so cute. I used the correct batting and cotton thread. The bags all burned up in the microwaves. I was so embrassed. I contacted the company and they said there had been no other problems. I got the sewing machine, that I used for the project, out today. I think it may have had a prewound bobbin on it... do you think that could have caused my bags to burn?? I could not find anything on the package of prewound bobbins to indicate what kind of thread is on them. I really like those bobbins. What do think of using them for quilting? I use them for embroidery.

I don't know for sure as I have never used them but I was told they are poly blend or something but not cotton unless stated. Im so sorry this happened to you.

I had the very same problem - I bought the special tater cotton - cotton fabric and 100% cotton thread - my sister-in-law - hers caught fire - I was very concerned because I sold alot of them at a craft sale. Very interested in what you find out. I will try to attach a pic - that my sis in law sent me.

Are you sure that the batting was the Warm & Natural for baked potatoes or the Insulbrite they sell for pot holders & the like! Insulbrite has metal threads throughout it & will burn up in the microwave.

The pre-wound bobbins I buy for my Janome are 100% polyester.

The batting and fabrics were sold as microwave safe from Keepsake. The President of Keepsake Quilting said there were no other reported problems with their batting or fabric in the kit so it had to be something I did wrong. Top thread was 100% cotton so it must have been the bobbin.
Before ordering the kit, I asked about the batting at a LQS and they did try to sell me insul bright instead. Boy would that have been a great Christmas gift!!

Did you report it to the company? Maybe there are more out there like us. If there is a problem they need to know about it.

Polyester melts, it doesn't burn. The cotton thread would actually burn if that is what caused the problem. If you have any scraps of the materials that you used, you might check to make sure it's what it is supposed to be. People have to put kits together and people sometimes make mistakes.

NO....if you used the right fabric, the right batting and even a poly thread and the bags burned, it was probably because they used a WET potato in the bag! Did you instructions tell them to make sure the potato was dry or wrapped in a paper towel?

I have the tear off from the warm and natural...they have a special one called "warm tater". It is 100% natural cotton, does not contain resins or glues.
Is this the stuff you used?
After reading the instructions, I noticed that you need to wash and dry the potato bag before use. Maybe the bags weren't washed? The finish on the fabrics might have been the problem.
