Bookmarks vs Subscriptions

OK, Ranger was kind enough to let me know how to get a topic into my bookmark/subscription area (item went into subscriptions). My question is what is the difference between bookmarks and subscriptions? They seem to essentialy be the same to me. Am I missing a finer point here, and if they are the same, why did they put the two items in here - to just complicate things further? I suspect I'm missing a piece of info about bookmarks vs subscriptions.

Thanks a bunch if someone can clarify this for me.

You can actually change the name from 'subscription' to whatever you like. You can also create other folders like pictures, tips, ect. depending on why you have bookmarked a particular thread. I have found these folder names a help since we are no longer able to make notes when we bookmark a thread.

it didn't take me long to realize that our new Subscriptions tool is superior to the old ways. it's just a matter of getting past the semantics.

1. in the old system, Bookmarks were Bookmarks; Watched Topics were Watched Topics. Period. if you wanted to Watch a Bookmarked topic, you had to mark it once for each feature.
2. not everybody who marked a topic to Watch it actually got the update notifications. my own stopped working more than a year ago. now they work.
3. old system: to see what was bookmarked and what was watched, i had to go to two different places. i can find both now, conveniently listed under my Settings.
4. if i'm watching a topic (requested emailed update notices) i can choose from three different notification options. noy so in the old system.
5. i can change something from bookmarked to watched by simply changing the tracking/notification options. not so in the old system.
6. if i have them categorized in different folders (which we could not do before; now we can by using the Edit Folders tool) i can move them around between those folders in just a few seconds.
7. as Camping Angel pointed out, you can rename your folders in any way you like and find more useful. call 'em Harry if it helps.

that's just 7 ways in which the new system for tracking threads/topics is superior to the old. i'm sure if i devoted more time to the task i could identify more.

so ...

as far as where we have to look for the Subscription tool ... has anybody noticed the other nifty features available under the Thread Tools drop-down?

could we email board pages to friends before? no
could we click to produce a printable page before? no

so.... to me, it's :D and  to the new way. i find it much more flexible and useful than before. i hope everybody will customize it to their own needs and eventually come to the same conclusion. :)

Remember the Tammy and the BAchelor movies. Well to use one of TAmmy's words, "I have become more and more discombobbled" when I read this. Now I have even more questions than I had before. It is not anyone here's fault -- it is my pea brain that cannot take in anymore :o) To be honest, I don't even know what Settings to look for. But that's just me. Thanks to all who are trying to help.

Jackie...settings is way at the very top of the page, on your right....just click it, then in there you will see subscriptions and bookmarks. Hang in there, you'll get it...just keep asking, that's how we all learn.

Thank you, Patrice!! This is great info. I use email every day at work and have folders and folders and more folders to help sort everything out and keep it organized where I can find it more easily. It's great to have some of those features here!!

I guess I'm dense, but I can't find out how to bookmark or subscribe.

I'd like to know why many of my bookmarks are not mine, and why so many that I had before no longer exist? If they do, then where are they? Really want to know. Marge L.

But still don't see the difference in bookmarks vs subscriptions yet.

Thanks Patrice - will have to print this one as I can't remember all those tips. But, I still am wondering about bookmarks vs subscriptions. Are they really one and the same - because I just don't understand what the difference is. Thanks again for your patience.
