Flannel quilts

I’m making a lap size quilt for my elderly mom who is in a wheelchair. She is often cold so I want to make something warm but not heavy. How do you finish your flannel quilts? Do you use batting? Any suggestions are appreciated.

You can try using just fleece for backing. No batting.

I used to make double ones from polar fleece. two layers, cut fringe on all sides and tie the two fleece pieces together. nice and cozy and warm.

Remember flannel shrinks a lot, so prewash and dry before cutting.

Doing the two layers of fleece with the fringe might not be a good idea for someone in a wheelchair. The fringe could get caught in the wheels. But another idea would be a flannel rag quilt.

I just put 80/20 (80%cotton/20%poly) in for the batting when I make flannel throws. They are nice and cuddly that way. I do live in northern Minnesota, and I sometimes even use my flannel throw in summer Yikes!

I've used both Warm and Natural batting with my flannel quilts, fleece without batting, and I've also used a batting called Thermore. Thermore is a lightweight poly batting often used in quilted jackets for warmth without bulk.
