"Invalid Thread"

I wonder why there are so many "invalid threads" when I click on a subject. Is it because someone posted something that isn't allowed on the Quilting Board? I just don't want to be guilty of posting something that has to be removed. Is there a place where the rules are posted? TIA (thanks in advance.)

bearisgray 05-01-2018 09:58 AM

There is a "rules/guidelines" thread posted at the top of each section.

Here is the link for the General Chit-Chat Section

https://www.quiltingboard.com/genera...-a-t21986.html

There are a few clear-cut no-nos for posts - religion, politics, vulgarity/swearing, crude sex, bashing, etc.

Many of us have had threads deleted - for one reason or another - I think most of us do not knowingly post something unsuitable - so do not feel that if you have a thread deleted or edited that you have committed a cardinal sin.

Sometimes the original post was "okay" - but then the additional comments made it go downhill.

rats, i just clicked on one too. must be "new" people doing something they should not. I hope they get it stopped.

that's very funny. truly. lol

seriously, though, the "invalid thread" error will show up most often when people rely on the digest lists of threads. they do not automatically update if we have to move or delete a thread. (most often, threads are moved to the correct section ... not deleted.)

the digest lists are useless. they don't show what's new. they only show what's "busy." well ... with so many people only looking at those they will stay the "busiest."

use the "What's New" option in your top menu bar.
then you get to see what's really going on around here. :)

Hi Patrice,
I log into the site each time and use the 'whats new' tab at the top. I ran into several 'invalid thread' instances yesterday AM. Thought perhaps it was my 'connection' so logged out and back in. Then those 'invalid threads' were gone! Definitely not a 'digest' issue in my case. Just an FYI.

But why do they make it to the digest when there are others that we'd like to read?

they are listed automatically by a software routine.
the routine doesn't "know" they are in the wrong place or that they don't comply with rules.

do not rely on the digest.

i'm stumped about that one.

deeleigh 05-02-2018 05:58 AM

I am stumped by the invalid threads too. I asked the administrator but wasn't sure what the answer meant. Really annoying when you think it is something you would like to see(according to the heading)

IceLeopard 05-02-2018 06:25 AM

I was seeing that too, and it wasn't with either the digest or the "what's new" function. I was doing an advanced search for washing "cotton batting." About half the threads that showed up in the results gave me "invalid thread" when I clicked on them.

Most of them were older threads, so it was highly unlikely that they had all been moved in the few minutes between my initial search and when I clicked on them. If they had been deleted or moved to a "moderators only" part of the forum, they wouldn't have shown up at all. Date did not seem to matter. Some older threads gave me errors, but others even older came up just fine.

Today is the first time in probably 'months' that I have been able to 'log in'. I know I used the correct login name and pw. Hmmmm

i did the same advanced search and encountered no problems.

nooooo .... i am neither stating nor implying that the problem you encountered was your fault.
i just can't replicate it so also can't explain it.

i will need some specific links to examples, please.

My settings in Advanced Search:
Searching Multiple Content Types, but with nothing checked
Keyword search washing "cotton batting",
user name and tag search blank
Find posts Any Date and Newer
Sort results by Relevance in Descending order

Doing that particular search, on the very first page there are at least 3:
#1. Hobbs 100% cotton batting
started by aborning 01-21-2013

#3. This wrinkled 100% cotton batting thing
Started by Robinhood 03-13-2014

#8. Pellon "Natures Touch" 100% cotton batting?
Started by mea12, 07-19-2015 01:16 AM

All of them give me the same error message: "400 Bad Request" and under that in tiny lettering it says "cloudflare."

I am using an Android tablet and Chrome.

Searching only Single Content Type under Posts gave me an entirely different list of threads. Perhaps that's why you got different results than I did.

IceLeopard 05-02-2018 01:56 PM

Hm...the software won't let me edit the thread now. Just wanted to add that with the same search parameters, on a laptop running Windows7 and Firefox, I got the same results.

nuevaquilter 05-02-2018 02:03 PM

This is good info. I do rely on the digests (thank you, morning email). I'll go directly to What's New from now on.

nativetexan 05-03-2018 09:18 AM

I get in the Home page every time. read Main, Pictures and other sections. the invalid post i read was by Zinda. cannot find it now or remember what it was about. I thought she might be new but she's been around awhile. I have no idea what they happened.

patricej 05-03-2018 12:43 PM

there was a duplicate posted. the extra was deleted.

NJ Quilter 05-04-2018 03:46 AM

Patrice, thanks for that explanation. In my case the other day there were about 3-4 different threads that came up 'invalid thread' - not just the one. I, too, do not remember by whom or what the subject was at the time but it was multiple posts.

OurWorkbench 05-05-2018 06:25 AM

Interesting topic, I do understand about why some of them show up as invalid per another thread about this subject I found -

"An Invalid Thread is one that has either been:
-moved and the redirect has expired;
-merged and the redirect has expired; or
-deleted because it did not comply with policy

A closed thread is one that remains visible but can’t have new comments added. "

I found one thread just this morning that was completely deleted even though the thread was started at least 4 1/2 years ago. It had at least two posts from 2015, one in 2016, one in 2017 and then one this morning. I do understand why the one in 2017 would be deleted, but why not then? and why now and the whole thread?

Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do.

cashs_mom 05-05-2018 08:10 PM

Interesting. . . I always log on to the main page and use "What's New". I haven't had "Invalid Thread" show up yet.

patricej 05-06-2018 01:23 AM

sometimes new posts are added to old threads.
if those posts create problems too complicated to surgically correct we take down the whole thread.

since the thread had been dormant for so long it obviously had served its purpose and been "over with."

unless it's your own thread that is moderated, stop worrying about it.
