CK, I’m not sure what Law of Fabric dictates that “No matter how many scraps are used to create a quilt, a near-equal amount remain after completion.” Maybe we should call it the Law of Quilt Scraps. So if I (a retired physics & chemistry teacher) write LQS, I may mean this law instead of Local Quilt Shop!

Even though I had to shop I didn’t look at sales or anything I just found what I needed & left, so still doing good. I’m going to continue working on taming my scraps and try to pass some on. Even though my shelves are showing signs of improvement those scrap bins seem to just get bigger and bigger. I used all scraps for my Bonnie Hunter ( Good Fortune quilt) and just created more scraps. .....
I'm not one for scrap quilting, typically. For me, it takes too long to organize and cut up. I'm getting better at it. Last year my green scraps were out of control so I made a strip quilt and it worked out well. I need to try doing that more. Now, I'm attempting to cut up scraps in different sizes to avoid scrap bags. But, you are are right, it seems we just make more scraps. Lol.. Oh well...

Well, I am back from my sew-in day at the LQS, and I didn't too bad on the moratorium end. I only bought 2 fabrics, one is Mille Fleurs to go with a precut I have, and the other is a William Morris fabric to go with another precut left from a previous project. They will both become backing. Since both fabrics are Moda and were $5 a yard, it seemed only logical to jump on it.

As far as scraps go, I have lots of scraps from trimming my quilts after the longarm. Some I have cut up into usable pieces. But I struggle with the whole scrappy concept. I was an apparel sewer for many years, so in my mind fabrics have to be matchy matchy. That's where precuts come in handy, I don't have to labor over difficult decisions of what coordinates with what. I AM getting better, slowly. And one day I will take the big plunge and throw scraps together willy nilly and force myself not to make color/pattern judgments. But until then I will attack the precut and yardage stashes and attempt to reduce the volume.

I have a similar perspective. Not so much that the fabrics exactly match but that they have the same personality type if that makes any sense.

Using random scraps will-nilly can be a little stressful when you are used to having all your fabrics match. The first time I did a random scrappy, I used the "Paper-Bag" method--I took all the scraps, tossed them in a bag, and pulled them out one at a time without looking, except to make sure I did not have the same color next to itself. The whole time, I was skeptical, and was sure the quilt would look horrible. The resulting quilt, however, turned out awesome, and is now my favorite. I now have no trouble at all using random scraps. So, my advice is to just jump in and try it.

JJ..that is absolutely stunning! Cannot believe that this was not a planned colorway....now you've inspired me to try scrapping more. I don't have a bunch of scraps because I always make a second quilt with the leftovers right away for donation but I do have full ziplocks in each colorway I could still play with. We'll see...

Well, if this was a donation to you and you didn't buy it, could you say that you took it to help a friend reduce her stash? Hmmm! Maybe it's not so bad. You had to help a friend, didn't you? What shall we say, maybe 10 push-ups and we'll forgive you?

happylab, did you know there is a Harry Potter quilt along? https://sewfreshquilts.blogspot.com/...ilt-along.html. I'm not a fan of HP, but know lots of folks who are.
