For those who have done samplers before, how do you end up with such a balanced look (thinking of Dotty's prize-winning sampler) if you have not planned out the entire quilt first? Do you end up deciding on your final placement of blocks based on the colors you used in each block, or do you choose your colors for each block based on the final placement of the blocks?
My machine is in for servicing with a 2 1/2 week estimate, so I will have to content myself with pressing and cutting and swooning over other people's blocks for the time being. I did receive my book yesterday, and watched a youtube on foundation paper piecing, which I have never done.

Whilst I was waiting for the start of the BOM I traced a lot of the foundation templates onto quilting paper - save a bit of time later.

Joe's mom, I try to keep things a bit balanced as I'm making the blocks, but I don't decide which block goes where until I've got them done. I don't try to stay with the original layout, as I'm not trying to make a copy. Usually after I'm about half done I'll start looking them over to see if I need to pay more attention to what colors I'm selecting.
I had a lot of fun sewing today - 8 at a time is a good number, though I do think that Oregon Trail has no business being made that small. When I've got one like that, I'll keep the arc and extend the sides a bit so I can sew it and then trim to size in case I don't get the sides lined up exactly. Those ones seem to get a bit skewed for me, so I gave up trying and over size and trim to get perfect 2" blocks to sew together.
I'm still planning to start Dear Jane and Nearly Insane along with the Dear Jen to work on along with this one. We'll see how those plans go . . .
The first picture is the fabric I've selected. This is scraps, fat quarters and less than a yard pieces. I've got plenty of fabric in larger chunks if I use it all up (If I could only get that lucky!).

We had a holiday in Texas a few years ago and I wrote on QB to ask if there was a Dear Jane group near where we were staying in Grapevine and got a reply to say there was at Quilters Dream in Colleyville and I went along and met a great group of ladies. A couple of years later we went back and I asked here if we could meet up again. To my amazement Brenda Papadakis ( author of DJ - who wanted to come along as well ) She was such a lovely lady and I had an amazing day with them all.

I am about 3/4 of the way through the Farmer's Wife and using scraps in a traditional color way. I was worried about balance of colors and would lay them our from time to time but found very few places where I had too much brown or too much blue. Made just a couple of changes but not many. I was doing the blocks in order so I just keep rotating my color choices so no two color ways were next to each other. Seemed to be working just fine. Guess I could cut my sashing then start stringing them together. After three years, I am not in a big hurry. Summer, maybe.

Y'all have some great ideas on color balancing. I don't know what I'll try, I do remember seeing a grid for Dear Jane where a block could be inserted into it's place then as each block is done, it could be inserted into the final photo. I may work with something like that. Since we are photographing each block, that might work. Thanks everyone.

Gagigi, thanks for the question. I was wondering the same question. I have never made a sampler quilt where I purchased all new fabric. I always have used scraps from my stash where it didn't matter. I may look at the patterns for the blocks a little closer and find the widest width and cut a strip of that size to start with. Any advice would we welcome, from two of us now.
