Speaking of Accuquilt, I know that BH does not give die information for her Mystery quilts. For those who have a cutter and can figure out which die is needed, do you use a die if you’ve got it or also buy it if you need it? I didn’t have an Accuquilt cutter when I did Grassy Creek last year.

Terry in the ADK 11-22-2021 03:49 PM

Accuquilt

I most certainly use any die I can. It is painful for me to cut ( and then usually have to trim) so many small units. My AccuQuilt allows me to enjoy the process. If I don’t have the necessary die, I may purchase it if my LQS has it in stock or it will arrive before the reveal.
All that said, you do use more fabric so if you are a short on some yardage, it may not be for you.
Since my family decided not to come for the holiday, I am so looking forward to Friday’s kickoff. You ready?

jemedwards 11-23-2021 05:44 AM

With the two previous BH quilts that I've completed, members have no problem helping each other out via private messaging about which Accuquilt Die to use, when BH posts the clues. I was able to use my Accuquilt through most of the cutting. That's my biggest problem, trying to convert her directions into which Die I should use so I've messaged those that are available for their assistance and that's helped a lot. I have bad shoulders so using my Accuquilt is imperative for me.

Sandra-P 11-23-2021 06:08 AM

I think it is great that members help each other out via private message. Bonnie does not want to ruin the mystery and says that if she posts the dies then some clever folks might guess what the block is and spill the beans so to speak. I use my Accuquilt dies, each year the arthritis in my body is worse so it saves me from the pain and also lets me enjoy my hobby. Looking forward to our first clue!

Yep..I use the dies I have and if I do not have the die I will usually order it as Bonnie tends to use the same sizes and shapes in her mysteries. So if I do not get the die in time for the clue this year, I will have it the next time. also, I find most of the shapes used in her mysteries are also ones that are used in other patterns that I do. I used to order the die I needed, other dies I wished I had, and then extra cutting matts to get to the magic number for free shipping. The mats do eventually wear out and they are expensive now. I also noted that now you need to spend 225 to get the free shipping. Wow that went up. (oh, not every size and shape is used for the next mystery but I have done several now and usually a size shape will pop up again in a few years)

Ahhhh....2 days and counting. Oh wait, who's counting? LOL.

I'm not even doing this mystery quilt and I'm excited for you all! Enjoy the anticipation!

Iceblossom 11-24-2021 09:13 AM

I am so ready and so excited -- but weather forecast says a second "river" of rain is heading our way and due to start on Thursday. We are staying home anyway, let's hope power and internet stays on! It will be a good weekend to stay inside and dry, and so nice to have a new project to start :)

toverly 11-24-2021 04:13 PM

Yeah! New carpet was finally installed yesterday. First room to set up was my sewing room. I'm going to pull as I go on this one. Love the Mystery thru the Holidays.

joe'smom 11-24-2021 05:03 PM

I washed all of my mystery fabric today, and I have my Harriet's Journey sashing fabric prepared. My plan is to put Harriet together while I enjoy watching all of you work on the mystery clues.

Michellesews 11-24-2021 05:57 PM

I use my dies. If I need a bunch of squares, you get ill use the dies!

happylab 11-25-2021 09:09 AM

I’m all ready to start tomorrow morning. I have all of my fabric together. I’m undecided if I will do 2 of these mysteries. I pulled the colors scraps/fq’s from my stash. I plan to make a twin size for this one. I’m also thinking of doing it out of fabric I really like and doing a larger king size if I like this. This one will be in different colors and much more controlled fabric. Mostly batiks and only a few fabrics for each colorway. The second colorway I’m thinking on waiting for the revealing then spend the next year sewing and quilting the project. This way I can do the QAL and make one in the colors & size I like. As soon as I figure out again how to post pics of my fabric I will. I tried to post pics earlier, but I keep forgetting the 1st step or two to post. I really need to write out the directions and put in my cell phone notes for easy access. Talk to you all tomorrow. It’s so like an early Christmas present and waiting for Santa 🎅.

happylab 11-25-2021 09:11 AM

I’m thinking of using my dies for the 1st time this year. I will just maybe need to PM some one if I can’t figure it out myself 1st. Until tomorrow. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

ibex94 11-25-2021 01:15 PM

Please correct me if I'm wrong about this.... using the paint chip cards, two medium intensity colors (pink and yellow), one dark (garnet), and one light (aqua) plus the neutrals in this mystery.

Iceblossom 11-25-2021 01:20 PM

That's how I read it Ibex, if going by values. She has said that we can wait until later to decide on the Aqua and suggested using one fabric. I have a couple options pulled, one pretty much exactly her paint colors but I just don't know... By yardage, neutrals are half.

And for those and the dies, all I can say is I have sent more than one private message! Just keep in mind, that I cut large but in order to do that I have to figure out what the measurements are supposed to be.

ibex94 11-25-2021 01:31 PM

Thank you, Iceblossom. I love the colors she picked but I want to make a top for someone that doesn't particularly like those colors. If I am going to do this mystery, I need different colors.

pinkflowers 11-25-2021 03:43 PM

Very excited - the first clue is almost here! I'm trying to finish up a few 'small-ish" projects today. I wanted to give my sewing a room a quick pick up, but it may not happen. I'm content to just be sewing.

I had a friend ask why Bonnie does her Mystery during the Holidays, after all it's such a busy time (she says)! I explained that Bonnie is a caring person and realizes that some people are alone or saddened during this time, and her Mystery brings excitement, a sense of community and a distraction from not-so-happy things.

Then I realized today, I'm one of those people! I'm blessed and thankful for so much. Even so, I could sure use a distraction!

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Rhododendron Trail Eve!!

Queenbarbiej 11-25-2021 05:24 PM

I'm doing this mystery this year. I'm changing the aqua to a parroket green. They will go with the border I've picked out.

Iceblossom 11-26-2021 04:45 AM

And -- It's up! Happy mystery everyone :)

pinkflowers 11-26-2021 05:34 AM

Parakeet green is such a fun color! Will look lovely with the pinks and yellows!

jemedwards 11-26-2021 05:51 AM

Yay, I have the Accuquilt die for Part One!

Today I took advantage of Accuquilt Black Friday deals to order some Quarter Triangle dies. Last year I borrowed those but I expect they’ll be used again sometime during this mystery so I expect to receive them before a clue arrives using them.

KalamaQuilts 11-26-2021 06:40 AM

this Jennifer Chiaverini book is on sale today, not a fan, but I had to laugh when I saw the blurb that says "the day after Thanksgiving marks the start of the quilting season" :) Happy mystery everyone!

Bonnie's Black Friday post is labeled Part One. Let the sewing begin!

I was just going to observe and not take part in the BH mystery this year. Then I saw the first clue and realized I can use up some the hsts that were left over from Frolic. Now I’m very tempted.

I decided to jump in with fabrics from my stash and not going scrappy. So glad to see familiar names too.

toverly 11-26-2021 11:05 AM

Woo hoo! I am so ready for this. I think I will do the 8 at a time method for the first clues. Can't get started till tommorrow.

Mumto2 11-26-2021 03:56 PM

I’m planning to start tomorrow too!

origamigoldfish 11-26-2021 07:00 PM

I am going to use Thangles for the units in part 1, my current project is made of pinwheels using the exact same size and I bought a couple of extra packs just in case. I love how the paper stabilizes that seam when sewing and pressing, I don't have nearly the warping issues I have had in past quilts with lots of HST. As much as I love Bonnie's Triangle tool, it is much faster to cut them out using the paper, too.

Free shipping today on AccuQuilt!
so glad I have this weeks die. I have decided to make the sub cuts large enough that the “trimmings” will make strings for strip quilting, oh good another project started.
jemedwards, I PM’d you.

Stitches23 11-27-2021 05:51 AM

Mine are cut and ready to sew - maybe later today when things settle down around the house.

ScubaK 11-27-2021 07:13 AM

Mine are half sewn....while I try to finish Grassy Creek...

Iceblossom 11-27-2021 07:18 AM

I'm mostly done with this week's clue. Got the cutting and sewing done yesterday. Today I still have to press a couple and then since I do my cut large/trim down stuff, the trimming. I used about 2/3rds pink and 1/3 my added purples and am pretty happy all in all. Sorry if I jinxed anyone but I was hoping for a lot of triangles out of the neutral!

I know the future weeks keep me busier (and I'm going to reread the directions to make sure I didn't miss anything), but for now I am going to have to figure out a couple days of sewing.

Thanks for the reminder! Dug out some Thangles and it was quick.

Mumto2 11-27-2021 07:15 PM

I have all but one set done. I used 1 strip of each of my pinks from the kit I bought and hate to not use a whole strip and I have lots of the same shad of pink in my stash.

Ooooo -- pinkflowers, I love your fabrics!

Here's a representative shot of mine (pre-trimmimg), one of the purples got in there twice and I think I got all the piinks... In addition to cutting large, I press my seams open but the dog ears get trimmed off anyway.

SusieQOH 11-28-2021 06:55 AM

I got our my roll of Triangles on a Roll for this week's clue. So easy!!! I'm almost done with them. Love everyone's fabrics!

As I'm not a fan of pink, I swapped it out with orange. I didn't realize how much fabric I have until I started on this. I figure by the end, the mystery quilt is not even going to make a dent. But as I tend not to do scrappy quilts, this is certainly allowing me to spread by wings.
