Finished my 4P today, I ended up making quite a few extra and will use those for something!!
Some of the light blues kind of washed out in the flash, they are not as pale as they look in the photo.
I am hoping to end up with a good throw size, so I am making 3/4 of the suggested blocks. Will adjust the number at the end as needed.

tallchick 12-03-2019 10:43 AM

Girlfriend- I think your choices are fantastic!

I’m really enjoying seeing everyone’s progress and color choices. I’m finished with the first clue and I’m looking forward to the next one.

Here are my four patches. I substituted purple for blue and yellow for the raspberry. I am making fewer blocks, I can add to them if I decide I want a larger quilt.

I really like your purple and yellow combinations. Perhaps I will try that color combo some time.

origamigoldfish 12-03-2019 03:24 PM

I love all of your finished four patches, it is really exciting to see how the colors work together!

Question for those of you with more experience than me...should I set that final seam with my iron before i spin the seams and then press it again, or can I spin the seams first and just press once?

It took me all day, but my strips are joined and pressed, I am beginning to cut them into the final squares! I have already learned so much about accurate piecing just in the first step...I thought I had that scant quarter inch down, but my rulers don't lie, lol

Origami, I just spin and press in one step.

Angelia, I love your fabrics. It's so fun to see what everyone has. I started my 4-patches today. I'm still trying to finish up some Christmas gifts, so I may not get the first clue done by Friday. I had to pull out some of my original choices, since there wasn't enough contrast. I also make more than I need, just so I have a little better variety to choose from. But that doesn't prevent me from putting two of the same fabric together! I opted for a solid for the green. It will be busy enough.

Thanks in advance to our mathematicians. I sooooo appreciate your help.

41" x 41" would be a quarter size. But since we don't know how the pieces are going together I'd recommend making a third of the blocks. You'll have too many of some but not enough of others so you'll have to adjust at the reveal. For example, Bonnie likes pieced borders and sometimes sashing, so you'd need more of those than the pieces in the actual blocks themselves, but we won't know that until the reveal. If you don't want any left over, then do a fourth and be prepared to make more at the end where needed.

Cute 4-patches everyone love seeing all the color combos!
Here are mine are not trimmed yet hope to have to do minimal trimming:thumbup:
I went with orange instead of the Framboise/raspberry color as the recipient did not care for that color. Used dark blue and light blue.

Everyone's patches look great! I can't wait to see how the different colors shape up.

Leslie, that will be pretty!

I set the seams first, all at one time, then do the twisting and pressing.

SusieQOH 12-04-2019 03:34 AM

Love what I'm seeing!!! :)

Iceblossom 12-04-2019 08:10 AM

Really enjoying all the pictures, is nice to know I'm not the only one mixing up the color palette! I trimmed my blocks and triple counted them at my small group on Tuesday. Today I'm working on finishing up my other on-going project.

I've gotten my friend Barb in Arizona to start lurking here :) She was pleasantly surprised to see how many people are doing the mystery. Barb has some amazing skills and talents. She's taught classes and make and takes. I think she was kind of iffy about quilting at first until she fell in love with batik fabric the first time she saw it. Many many years ago, Barb and I were room-mates and got exposed to me quilting that way. I have a couple of friends that figured "well if she can quilt, I can quilt" and have gone on to do wonderful things. Barb is one of them! Barb is also very good with technical stuff in terms of sewing equipment and photo transfers and scanning and embroidery machines and is one of my resources for things like that. She is also rather modest but I recognize talent when I see it.

Motorcyclemad 12-04-2019 10:00 AM

Everyone's progress looks great  . I am still waffling about fabrics. I do love how everything is coming together though.

I finished piecing my squares today, after quite a bit of struggle I found a way to get my consistent seam allowance without fighting myself or the machine. I will press them and hopefully get a picture after dinner; some of the color combinations I just love, but others I don't care for. I think it was because my dark blues were full of almost-black fabrics and very few actual blues, and my raspberry shades are mostly pink without the purple and red undertones. That's what I get for not choosing my own fabrics, but I also refuse to judge the whole project by one tiny part of it. Once I see how it fits into the whole I may forget all about how little I like the pink and blues together.

I'm enjoying the scrappy feel and giving up so much control and just going with the flow. I wanted to focus on learning technical things here, not creativity!

I made a handful of extra blocks, in case something ends up measuring short when I go to trim my blocks in the morning or I don't like the way some of them fit in the whole quilt.

ILoveToQuilt 12-04-2019 03:14 PM

Thanks for the math help everyone! Will start with doing 1/3 of the number required.

Carol in WI 12-04-2019 03:30 PM

Speaking of math - I wonder if one of you math experts could check my math. I want to make my quilt 100 x 100 and without stating numbers on this site, perhaps you could pm me the number of extra 4 patches I need to make. I love math usually, but need some confirmation:) Thank you in advance.

Kassaundra 12-04-2019 04:20 PM

With mysteries it is not straight forward, but this "formula" should get you close.

You first need to know the square inches (bhsi) of BH's finished quilt
The si in your desired quilt (ysi)
The si in 1 4p minus seam allowance, (si4p)
How many 4p in the quilt (4p)

You need to know the % of 4p in bhsi

finished quilt length x width = bhsi
(4p length - sa) x (4p width - sa) = 4psi
4psi x how many to be sewn = total 4psi

once you have that the % of 4p would be figured at
total 4psi / bhsi x 100 = 4p%

Then 4p% x ysi / 4psi = number of 4p you will need.

You will need the formula for all future steps anyway

If we plug in fake numbers this is how it looks

80 x 80 quilt = 6400 si (bhsi
1 4p - sa = 4.5 4psi (I just put in the total si for easy math instead of multiplying length and width)
4.5 x 50 (how many sewn in bh quilt) = 250 total 4psi
250 / 6400 x 100 = 3.9% (rounded to 4%)

So 4% of ysi will be how many 4psi you need in your quilt
4% x 10000 = 400
400 / 4.5 = 89

All these numbers are completely fake and just to show you the formula you will need to figure what % each clue is in ratio to the total square inches, then how to get that same % in your desired finish size.

Wow Kassaundra!- your formula is more complex than my math knowledge I think. the good news is that both of us came to a similar result - my total was 18 less than yours:). Thank you for sharing your wisdom.

Kassaundra 12-04-2019 05:57 PM

My final number was not accurate, I did not know the number of 4 patches to be sewn in BH's clue and didn't know the size of the 4 patches, and didn't know the overall size of the finished BH quilt so just fake numbers to show you how to put your numbers in to get an accurate number.

Yes! I was surprised at how much my seams were off when I did a bunch of 4 patches! But now I have an accurate seam. Geez! I thought I was past that :D

toverly 12-05-2019 03:18 AM

Go with what you love. I have finally figured out how to participate. I have struggled with the colors of Frolic but absolutely love Kalamaquilts, Not Ringo Star. Back in #357 post. So I'm going totally batik scrappy. Don't know if it will work but either way, I'll have colors that I can live with. Woo hoo! I'm in.

SusieQOH 12-05-2019 04:51 AM

That's good, Toverly!! I find it hard to work with fabrics I don't like. Life's too short!
I'm using my stash but only fabrics I really like. In fact, just recently I donated all my fabrics that I knew I would never use.
Glad you're in.

maminstl 12-05-2019 05:08 AM

I decided Monday morning to do this project - chose some fabrics and had my first clue done by noon. Of course, I did get up at about 4:) I went with gray as I have good variety and am just not a blue person, pink (mostly deep - not baby pink) and green. Have not decided yet on my neutrals, but I have plenty.

KalamaQuilts 12-05-2019 07:01 AM

toverly, glad to help ;) A forum is a crypt without posters, so the more I can snag in the better!

In a totally scrappy quilt I'm happy to mix vintage/reproduction/baticks/stripes/recycled shirts yadayada, but in 30's fabrics general neutrals just don't cut it for me. And I have nothing in the neutral pile to use. Today I'm going to a fabric store to look for white background with small polka dots for my neutral.

I quit buying fabric in 2001. And I find myself getting up this morning with that sickish feeling of need and anticipation that any addict would recognize. Will it never pass, will I never be well of it? All said with a smile, but I am so thankful for all those years without it, not even recognizing it still lays in wait.

joe'smom 12-05-2019 07:17 AM

toverly, glad you figured it out!

The sore throat of Saturday has developed into a sinus infection and I'm well out of it, so not sure if I'll be able to muster the energy to start Clue #2 on time. But Bonnie did mention it would be an easy one because she is away in Germany.

Here is a picture of my four patches...after sleeping on it and looking at the blocks in actual daylight instead of the mess of lamps in my sewing room, I am much happier with the colors. Out of all of them, there was only 1 I had to redo, and it was because my presser foot twisted the top seam. I swapped out feet after that one, lol.

I imagine I will be much better at taking pictures of fabric by the time I'm done with this too, lol

maminstl, Your grays sound very nice with deep pinks and green. Show us a picture when you can, okay? :-)

Kassaundra, gotta love fake numbers. lol

Girlfriend, I've learned since my first mystery that Bonnie's paint chips are often quite different from her inspiration photos/descriptions and from her fabric choices. I think maybe with the paint chips, she is wanting to give a precise palette that works optimally, since people will be using it to choose fabrics and because not everyone has a comfort level or expertise in choosing colors. For example, suppose you took a chip that was closer to how you perceive the main bluebonnet color (it seems brighter and more purple to me than the dress blues chip). That replacement chip might not look quite as good with the other paint chips. But when the chips are translated to a range of color in fabrics, that precision doesn't matter so much. I think the other factor is probably contrast. The paint chips may represent the optimal value contrast for the pattern, but it works with a range of values, just like the color.

This year I was really trying to use stash and not spend too much on fabric. I had lots of the navy blues, so I decided to stick closely to the chips. If I had been prepared to buy a lot of fabric this year, I might have gone with the look of the photos rather than with the chips. I think your fabric choices are wonderful!

Hi, and thanks for your reply. I think you are correct about the paint chips VS her actual fabrics... which is why I think it adds to my confusion. When I went back and read her directions, the paint chips are a range of color. I was taking too literally. Since this photo, I have added a few lighter fuscias (to add a range instead of one color), and took the 2 blues off to the right and added them to the lights on the left. I am happy with my choices (so far) and will post a picture of clue #1 after I transfer from camera to computer.

I agree with you about the cost and purchasing more fabric when you already have a stash. We want to use up what we have, however, we want our hard work invested in the colors we want. Ahh, such an expensive little hobby, isn't it?

SusieQOH 12-05-2019 12:26 PM

I think I have about 20 more to go.

Everyone's 4-patches are looking great! It's amazing how many shades of blue and raspberry exist.

Mine are done and I am anxiously awaiting tomorrow's clue. Going to a sit and sew with friends tomorrow so it will be fun working on the clue along with others doing the same thing.

This year I've modifying the colors again since I prefer more muted tones in my quilts. So far the colors I chose are playing well together, but only time will tell.

Wow...everyone is chugging right along. I just returned to Maine this week (having been gone a month) and was delighted to find the paint chips Iceblossom was so kind to mail me while I was in California. Thanks Cathy.
DH and I are in Massachusetts this weekend caring for his 99 year old mother so I am hoping to pop into a quilt shop in the area for some fabric inspiration. I have a small stash so I will need to add a few pieces of fabric for this project.

Joe’smom, I’m sorry to hear about your sinus infection...I was really careful traveling, wiping things down and dosing on EmergenC. I hope you are on the mend.

Origami and Girlfriend, your 4 patches look fabulous. I can’t wait to get started...and thank you for sharing your quarter-inch experiences. I will definitely be testing mine too.

Miss Rita, I love your color choice and cant’ wait to see how your quilt comes together.
Toverly, I’m happy that you decided to jump in and look forward to seeing your colors too.
SusieQ...you finished just in time for Clue 2. Are you doing the full size? I haven’t decided yet.

I really love these easy clues, keep 'em coming Bonnie! Maybe she is stretching the clues out a little longer this year by making units in multiple steps. Especially since it is a shorter time between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day this year.
