I don't think there was ever a specific exemption, but "store closing" was always a valid reason for purchasing :)

Iceblossom -- Kudos to you for resisting.

Now, an advance disclaimer. The JoAnn store in town will be closing, so I am planning to purchase neutrals when they go on the clearance sale to use as backings and backgrounds. I guess technically that is against the goals of this group, but I either get them on sale or later have to pay full price -- and I rarely pay full price for fabric these days.

I can’t hold my breath waiting for Joanne’s clearance sale. Liquidators might just truck it all out and I’ve seen it happen before.

Hello,

I used to be here on the QB frequently. Info says I was last on late 2023, but I think that was a quick pop in and leave immediately.

I've been No Buy off & on for years.

August 2024, I fell off the wagon and bought a pretty 18 pc FQ pack, and a 50 pc of range of color blenders.

I think 2023 was successfully No Buy. I'd have to find my excel file.

2025, good so far. Well, maybe. I was thinking about how to use the 18 pc FQ, and I decided what I would do. (posting over in the multi-challenge thread. See more there.)

Anyway...so, I decided I needed brown background for that quilt. Shopped Green Fairy, I generally try to buy one or two 15 y bolts of Moda solid in Feb during their annual sale. Then, since I wanted a backing for said quilt, slid on over to Connecting Threads. Found a brown, even lower price & they have backings, but. Hmm, ok what about Quilted Twins? Brown. 108" wide. Ok then. I bought 6 yards, enough for Backing, Binding, Borders, and Background. The four B's are legal, right? ;)

Also bought 4 y garment fabric, which I needed like a hole in the head, but, friend, friieeend! It was 58" wide and seersucker and ONLY $10.

That's my story.

Laughing. Where did you get fashion fabric?

@petthefabric Quilted Twins, just in case you were really asking.

Blue floral seersucker 58" wide

Yesterday I was asked to make quilt for a young woman going through chemo therapy. A hurry up request. Last night I picked out a pattern, calculated how much fabric I would need, and began envisioning the finished quilt top. It would involve purchasing about 2.5 yards for the top to add to what I have and then backing fabric. When I got up this morning, BAM!, I recalled a small bin of the requested color that was all scraps and a few half yard cuts from another quilt that I made this past summer and fall. Well what do you know, NO SHOPPING FOR ME!! I have more than enough to make the quilt in the requested colors. I have been saved by the blue bin of scraps. Three cheers !!!

Hoping to get the blocks finished this weekend and move forward rapidly from there.

Monday will be my real temptation. I am going to Lolly's in Shipshewanna to take advantage of their 30% off sale. The plan is to review my finishes and UFO's and only purchase backing fabric so I can get some finishes "out the door" in the next few months.

Good for you WMU! I'm sad to say that fabric kept calling to me and I gave in and bought it while on sale and a specific amount of yardage. It is for a specific project, but I will have to gather the other colors based on it -- and will shop stash first but need fairly large pieces. That Labyrinth Walk 3D maze, I have the project. I think I'm ok with the purchase.

Now, the other things that jumped into the box.. well, I am feeling a bit guilty. Everything was on sale and goes to a specific collection of fabrics. I think it was Watson who showed a gorgeous floral asking what to do with it, and it set my mind on my fantasy project. So these were related to that. A total of $50ish so not a huge fall from grace.

I am still planning on buying a big piece of black print this year, hoping to use it for a Bonnie Hunter neutral, and if not -- I have other things I can do with it, but couldn't find anything I liked on sale. Just couldn't bring myself to buy 6 yards at full price... being cheap helps me not buy fabric!

After piecing 4 lap size quilts and using some ugly fabrics, I decided it was time to pull all those fabrics that just don't speak to me any longer and discard them. I now have a large tote full of yardage, fat quarters, large scraps and even orphan blocks in this tote. They will be given to a church group of ladies that make quilts for the needy and areas that have been hit by the weather in this country. I estimate around 20 yards at least in the tote.

Does this count?

Belfrybat 02-15-2025 11:20 AM

Oh yes, Snooze, giving fabric away certainly counts. And if you are in the UFO group, giving orphan blocks away counts for that as well.

Iceblossom - I'm with you on the fact being cheap helps me not overspend. The JoAnn's liquidation starts either today or tomorrow, so all the "doorbusters" will be back to regular price less a % off. When it gets to 50% or better, I'll be shopping for fabrics to blend with what I have on hand. My goal is to make up fabric bundles with specific quilt patterns in mind so as not to over purchase. When Hancocks closed down here 7 years ago I went wild and am still using some of that fabric. I do not intend to do that this go-around.

WMUTeach 02-15-2025 04:16 PM

So much for my no shopping plans. I just this evening went to cut my back ground fabric and I miscalculated the number of squares I need, 8 X 20= 160, I only have enough background for 106 squares. Rats. Oh, well all of the rest of the fabric is cut and ready to go. Just have to stop by a LQS on the way home from church tomorrow and get two yards of background. ......... Rats my two favorite quilt shops are not open tomorrow.

Guess, I will add it to my list of fabric to pick up Monday when I go to Shipshewanna for the sale at Lolly's.

WMUTeach 02-18-2025 07:36 AM

Yes, I went shopping for fabric to finish quilts: 2 yards for block background for Chemo quilt, 3 yards for backing for this quilt.
2 yards of wide back for hospice quilt. 3.5 yards for BOM block quilt, and 2 yards of wide back that turns out to be a poor color choice. Oh, well I will put it to use on another quilt. Shopping yes, but the tops of all of these quilts are from stash and the backing was not willy-nilly shopping but fabric to create finishes. Yea!
