fmhall2 - Sorry you won't be able to join in but glad you will still follow along. Maybe we will inspire you to throw a set of pot holders into your mix. :) You could always get a project ready and we will encourage you for next year.

Muv...I'll be watching you tutorials. I've been wanting something to do in the evening when sitting with my DH in the evening while he watches TV so today when I stopped by my LQS, I picked up an appliqué pattern book for a Bird of Paradise Quilt. I'm anticipating a very leisurely process which I hope I like. It may take me several years if I get it completed.

What I have done is not new but it is a small American Flag with the stripes waiving that I have hanging on my front door since it was finished and only comes off for cleaning, I don't even take it off when I am decorating for the holidays. The other one that is done is an emb. angel holding the American Flag, this one I do put away for the winter and put it back out in the spring.

YukViv ... thanks for the link. I've already passed it on to a friend who recently mentioned an interest in native type fabrics.
W4Me ... I have to tell you ... Yesterday I saw an article in a magazine, titled 64 Quilts in a Day or something similar. I read on, thinking it was going to be a story of a group who had gathered to make some charity quilts or such. I soon discovered that the write had spent the year doing four sets of sampler quilt blocks ... each in a different colourway and theme/style. She had great plans they'd be done for Christmas, yet when she started laying out each set of the blocks, she hated them all. Not one of the sets got her excited! Then her DH suggested that they looked like potholders .... and so, she finished them all off as individual pot holders!!!! And how disappointing to go to all that work, and not be happy with the results. Now there's a LOT of potholders ...... lifetime supply? (I think she gave them as Christmas gifts!) |
QuiltE - are you trying to tell me I've been pushing the potholders too hard? :D
They just seem like the perfect small project with which to entice people who are hesitant about joining our fun. I'm thinking of trying to finish my centre block this weekend, despite not finishing the other quilt yet. The reason I'm thinking of finishing is because it will be hard. The way I've changed the design, the cross stitch maple leaf is straight but there are half square triangle borders attached to the sides so the block ends up on point like the rest of the blocks. I have never had to calculate half square triangles before so it will be a challenge. At this point, I don't even know the size of my leaf square nor the finished size of the block. How's that for a test? |
Not at all W4Me ... I just chuckled when I read what happened to those 4 quilts! And was :( for her that she was not happy with any of the 4 ... as a quilt! At least she made some lemonade!!! :) Instead of having four major UFOs!
HSTs ..... cut two squares 7/8" larger than the finished size you want after sewn in place with 1/4" seams. Right sides together, and draw line diagonally across one block. SEw 1/4" each side of the line. Slice on the line and press. Voila! two HSTs! .... I usually do at least 1" larger, so that I have some trimming allowance and can create realy nice and square HSTs. Is that what you wanted? |
