Leader Ender Challenge

3 Attachment(s)
Is any one else doing the Bonnie Hunter Summer Challenge?

http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2017/...enge-rail.html

Here is my attempt at this fun project. My hardest challenge is pressing the seams in the right directions so they all nest properly and being sure the four patch strip is turned in the right direction for nesting. I am having fun with this one.

Lets see what everyone is doing. I would love to see pictures and your best tips for doing this one.

A lot of fabric selection went into this. First I wanted to use my scrapocalypse pile for the rails and make it really scrappy. I didn't like it. Then I tried making the rails in each direction the same. I didn't like that either. I settled on a more uniform look and all rails are the same.

Please add your own pictures here for everyone to enjoy.
peace

Oh, I like your pattern and colors.

Tartan 07-15-2017 05:08 AM

Very pretty! I don't do leaders and enders because I get distracted and end up working on it to see what it looks like finished. The work I should be finishing gets neglected.

Just looked at the site since I really love your quilt and WOW you are brave to tackle this one with all those little four patches. Great colors.

BrendaK 07-15-2017 06:29 AM

Kool. I will be watching to see how this turnes out. BrendaK

Looking good! Have you really done enough sewing to have that much accomplished as a Leader/Ender project? I think you must be like me.. and just have to see what it's going to look like. (Tartan mentioned the same above).....

I am thinking of doing it, but that is as far as it has gotten so far. I enjoy doing appliqué and so don't have a huge project of piecing to work on at the moment where I could use the leaders/enders.

lynnie 07-15-2017 07:47 AM

beautiful color selection. I really like your pattern

tucsonquilter 07-15-2017 07:48 AM

I've spent two days cutting out the strips from my scraps and it doesn't look like I have touched the scrap pile lol. Haven't started on the squares yet.

ube quilting 07-15-2017 08:15 AM

Even though BH is the leader-ender queen, I am not doing this as a L&E. I picked the fabrics and sewing as a whole project.

QUILTNMO 07-15-2017 10:15 AM

ou are doing a great job!!!

NZquilter 07-15-2017 11:46 AM

That's the prettiest I've seen! I've seen a lot on Bonnie's open Facebook page, but I like yours the most:) I personally don't do leaders and Enders, but I think the challenge is cool.

Boston1954 07-15-2017 11:49 AM

Ube, I am not in it, but I just wanted to say that I love the colors you picked.

DeneK 07-15-2017 12:59 PM

I like your colors and layout... Like others, when I try to do L&E, I end up doing the project to see what it will look like and get lost from my primary project. For what its worth, when I am struggling with which way to press seams and frequently having to change their direction, I just press everything open and then it always fits.

I have 10 blocks finished and I am doing totally scrappy other than the black/white strip. I will use some different whites. I cut a bunch of 6.5" lengths from my 1.5" strips and decided I really prefer to use longer strips and chain piece several before cutting. I started sorting a donation of leftover scraps and am finding lots of 1.5" by 6.5" strips! I guess I will use them as I go. At least I didn't need to cut them! Lol!

I better check if I am ironing mine correctly. I always have some twisted seams.

I thought I was the only one who did that.

Great fabric selections Ube!

Nope. I'm in the same club. I was supposed to be doing a UFO but I thought I'd do some L&E at the same time.
Two hours later, nothing was done on the UFO but I had nine 16 patch blocks !

I'm doing a two rail fence (color and neutral) rather than Bonnie's specific project. I'm using 2" x 3.5" rectangles as L & Es--they are starting to stack up! She had mentioned the possibility of rail fence before the challenge, and I've wanted to make Attic Steps for a while, so I started a bit early hoping that she would choose rail fence. :)

twinkie 07-16-2017 01:01 AM

What an interesting design.

tessagin 07-16-2017 03:00 AM

I really like the colors you've chosen.

thimblebug6000 07-16-2017 08:38 AM

Okay, this motivated me to get started cutting rails at 1 ½ " x 5 ½ " and I will do colour blocks like a rainbow setting. I saw one on the Canadian Quilters FB page that looked really pretty, so while I am cutting colours for my crayon baby quilt, I have got 4 colours cut to bag up for this project. Thanks for posting and inspiring me to get going!

ube quilting 07-16-2017 01:20 PM

The strips are cut 1.5 x 6.5" not 5.5"

I am not doing the one with the checkerboard, so I am okay with the 1 ½ x 5 ½ " cuts, whew! Mine is 4 coloured strips and one black. 1.5 x 5 = 7.5 minus 2. for the inside seams = 5.5 " right?

ube quilting 07-17-2017 01:18 PM

So glad there was no miss cuts 'cause then you have to create another quilt.:D

MadQuilter 07-17-2017 01:32 PM

One of my friends does leaders and enders projects. She gets a lot of my scraps. I am not disciplined enough. My leader/ender is just a piece of scrap.

caspharm 07-17-2017 01:48 PM

It's looking good. I need to do it. I have printed off the directions, just need to start.

Beachbaby12 07-17-2017 02:34 PM

Wow your leader ender challenge looks great! Haven't attempted this - have other projects I'm working on, but would have loved to try it. May still at one point. I need to make a baby quilt and hope I can meet the challenge

Right as rain!

GeeGee 07-18-2017 11:05 PM

Oh I love yours but I have a huge box of 1 1/2 inch assorted strips already cut when making various projects that need to be used so I guess mine will be a total scrappy one.

Managed to get the purple ones done in between making the crayon blocks and piecing it's backing. Here are the few I have so far. (colours not true)

Very nice, the dark to light works great. Looks like a braid the way you have it laid out.:D It will have a wonderful weaved look as it grows.

kristijoy 07-25-2017 12:29 PM

Love Bonnie Hunter. I already had several 'leader/ender' projects cut out and ready to go, so I didn't start this one. Right now I'm working on a stacked coin type of design.

SusieQOH 07-28-2017 05:14 AM

Can someone tell me what "leader ender" is?

Susie go to Quiltville.com and click on Blog. At the top of the page you will see Tips and Techniques--click on that and then scroll down until you see Leaders and Enders.

How's this coming ube? My quilt buddy and I are doing a rail fence (three 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" cuts ) alternated with a 3 1/2" cut square..We've been digging into our scraps for this one!

D.Henson 08-31-2017 07:15 PM

I was going to do this one, but I have too many projects on my "to do" list right now. Your colors are great! Hope you post a picture when it's finished.

joe'smom 09-01-2017 05:55 AM

When I first read about Bonnie Hunter's leader/ender idea, it seemed so complicated. I was already using a leader -- old binding strips, but hadn't grasped the concept of the ender. Then it all finally clicked, that I could go through the same motions as I did using the binding strip, but actually work on sewing another project! So I'm currently using Orca Bay as my leader/ender project, which is an ideal one, as it goes on forever, LOL.

Loved looking at your yardage and quilt progress. You really are doing a great job.
