Part 2 is now available. I managed to get all my fabrics cut today including my “I Spy” rectangles. I will sew the A & B strips together first thing tomorrow morning and be ready to go for New Year’s Day. I look forward to seeing everyone’s fabric choices.

jmoore, I remember what a beautiful fabric line you used last year!
I could not get happy with my fabric choices, so I started from scratch. I also got my cutting done yesterday. It does seem to be an easy one this year, doesn't it? |
Great selection of fun fabrics Joe’smom. I think you are right that it does seem to be a simpler pattern this year. It’s always a fun project to ring in the New Year.
|
I have only made one of her mysteries in the past but decided to participate this time, as I have many small chunks of novelty fabrics…..I will do the lap size, working at cutting the novelty fabrics this afternoon.
|
Just finished a UFO and changed my avatar, tonight I will be cutting fabric. I’ll post pics later. Easy is good for New Years :-) hugs all!

Hello, all!
I've been on a quilting hiatus for a while for various reasons, but the Merry Mayhem Mystery is acting as my motivation to shake myself off and get back into it. I've done many of her mysteries in the past, sometimes managing to get 'er done in a single day of marathon quilting, other times at least getting a pretty good start and finishing later. I do have a 10k to run on New Year's Morning, so I imagine that this year I'll be finishing a bit later! I'm using today to pick my fabrics and slice 'em up. I do love me a scrappy quilt, and one of my "Scrap Saving System" Drawers is actually 4 1\2" strips, so I might can pull from those as well as cannibalize the smaller, odder pieces of fabric from my stash. Quilting mode...re-engaged. Happiness...increasing! |

Here are mine ready to go, just finished sewing the strips late last night and finished cutting them into strips a bit ago. I used a layer cake and went with the opposite on the color wheel. Since I’m not using face mask prints, I make the purples a little (but not too much) scrappy. Ready for the next steps! Hugs and happy new year all!

Today's the day! I'm so excited!
Everyone's fabric look outstanding! I just got my Steps 1 & 2 finished last night so hopefully it'll take me a few steps to fall behind :D |
I'm just getting back from church so have a late start. Here's the link for part 3 - https://www.merrymayhem.com/uploads/...147NYD-Pt3.pdf

Sadly, hit my first disappointment of the day as it appears I cut my directional fabrics incorrectly. Ah well, it's only 4 or 5 out of 15 or so fabrics I'm using for my Fabric C, so it definitely could have been worse!

Such a quick and fun quilt! I was just collecting clues but I might actually be able to put together a crib-sized quilt today! I hope everyone is piecing together theirs and will have a show and tell later this evening! Happy New Year!
|
The main reveal is out! (I think there's 1 more clue left of how it looks with the borders)
Gotta say, not necessarily my favorite pattern ever. But I was kinda expecting that given the fact I'm not huge on scrappy quilts. However, I think I'm going to try changing the orientation (so it'll be a final size of 108x92 instead of 92x108) but keep the diagonal running the same way, so that my directional fabric actually works lol I'm also going to see if a gradient look can be pulled off with the fabric I got, to minimize the scrappiness. Wish me luck :D |
Vadalia -- that sounds lovely!

Vadalia - I hope you can work the layout to keep your directional blocks. Yeah, it really is a busy scrappy quilt. I wish I had known earlier that there was an option for a constant fabric C as I might have gone with that. I have all the blocks made but not assembled. I'm considering making three more blocks and arrange them in a 3 x 3 pattern turned on their side in order to get two charity lap quilts from it. It doesn't seem as busy when smaller.
|
It is crazy how different this pattern looks depending on the colors used! I think a controlled scrappy is how I will try my crib quilt.
|
I thought it was specified to cut our Cs the other way!
My back was in no shape for cutting fabric today, so I will just enjoy seeing your works in progress. |
Inner Top Done!

Came home from running and got started on this. Just now finished the inner top. I don’t know…my dark and light might have been too stark in contrast to each other, but it was fun and very satisfying to get it put together so quickly!
|
I like it Quossum!! Very modern-esque with the dark and light when viewed in the thumbnail view. Get up close and the "I-spy" nature of the bigger blocks grabs your eye. Your quilt has multiple personalities! Great job!

Just finished my lap quilt borders and got it ironed. It’s raining here so I can’t take a photo right now. Here is a partial quilt photo. I used a layer cake called buttercup and slate, then used purples in my stash for the dark, a different dark green with yellow border, light grayish lavender inner border, and a gray and white print for the lights. I like the end result, very satisfying to get it done in a day. Hugs all!!
|
Love that color combo, Rebaquilts! Soft and stylish!
|
Nice photos everyone, will add my final border today and post a photo then. Mine is very colourful 🤪
|
Quossum -- I like it! It looks very contemporary.

Well, my first of two quilts is finished. I increased the blocks to 18 and used a 3 x 3 grid. On the next one I'm going to see about adding an extra 1/3 block to make it a bit longer. This one came out at 47 x 61" and I prefer charity quilts to be long enough to cover someone. All in all in spite of the busy-ness I'm pleased with it.
|
Rebaquilts, I like your idea of using a layer cake and I think I will do a lap next time using a layer cake I have had on hand wondering why I bought it. 😜 Your MMM quilt looks great.
Belfrybat, your quilt looks wonderful too and will make a nice charity donation. I only did a crib size and have the inner border on but will try to get the outer border done today and post a picture later. I hadn’t decided on my border until seeing what the top looked like…it will be a gift for a dear friend’s grandchild arriving February. |
With borders now

I got the borders on mine! I think it makes a difference.
The winter break is about over for me, so now I’ve got to decide whether to tackle quilting this one, or to keep working on other UFO’s. It really helped to get me back into “quilting mode,” though, so I’m very grateful. One of said UFO’s is also…err…the Merry Mayhem Mystery from a couple of years ago, though… oops! |

Well, I finished the second quilt today. I extended the length on this one. I debated on trying to make more half-blocks to extend it but my brain power wouldn't extend that far! This one measured 47 x 68" -- just perfect size for the charity quilts I make. Now onto the Cuts and Bolts NYE mystery. That one is on-point so I wanted to get these easy ones out first.
