hey vanessa,
just exactly how do you do a crazy quilt? I have tried, but end up in a "corner",,, |
I looked for a tutorial on crazy quilts, but did not find one.
There are several ways to approach a crazy quilt. The one I have heard of most often uses a foundation to which scrap pieces are sewn, then fancy embroidery stitches are used on or around the pieces. There are some threads (pictures) which show what people have done using this method. Do a search on the board. You could ask the people who posted those threads if they would post a tutorial. Just a thought... |
Go to "createtv.com" and click on Donna Dewberry. She has a real fast way of doing it. I believe there is a tutorail on there.

Check Bellaonline...nice article with a few pictures.

Sounds like a good plan. I actually made myself a to do list last year. It worked well.

Kaye,
I love the size of your log cabin pieces. Can you tell me the dimensions of each one. Thanks Quiltbaby |
the quilt quild I am a member has a simular challenge so I need to get busy!!!!!!
|
I just finished a lap quilt, have a twin ready for borders, an I-spy ready for clipping, and blocks for 2 baby quilts done and haven't made a dent in my scrap boxes much less my stash. This may be a very productive challenge.
|
I'm in. This is my favorite way to quilt!

Backing is up to you whether you purchase or are really thrifty/creative with what you already have!
The thinking here is to be like the women who quilted in pioneer days. They had no shops nearby and had to save worn out shirts and dresses or feedsacks to make a quilt. We can do that too! For inspiration, please visit www.quiltville.com and read her tips on scrap sorting and see the amazing quilts she has made from them! It is an awesome website. If you don't already have a scrap drawer, start one! Every time you trim off ends, square up your fabric, etc, put the strips and pieces into light, dark and medium assortments. I got a lot of satisfaction from going through my scraps and making them organized. Mine are in shoe boxes and ziplocs for now. I will have to get the clear storage drawer set up that Bonnie has on her website. Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with by next Christmas! ****** Hi, Ya'll. This is Patrice, here. Just wanted to explain why I had the "nerve" to post this to the top with a sticky so it won't move from Page 1. Just so happens, somebody who thinks this is a super idea asked me to find a way to make sure everybody knows about it. This was the best way I could think of to do that. YTQ |
If you guys have any selvages you want to get rid of, PM me.
They need to be at least 1 1/2" wide. |
That sounds good but got a question. What if none of the fabrics match. Whe if you have difereent designs and colors of fabric. Will it still look okay anhow. Just wondered beause I hav multicolors and prints that do not match at all. Thanks,
JOY |
i don"t think it has to match if you make a crazy quilt i have seen a lot of old quilts with a lot of different textures and designs the original quilts were from scraps from old cloths to keep warm i have a lot of polyester that were in the piles of fabric at an auction i have had put it aside until my friends mom showed me one that had every thing in it shape and size did not mater either. i am going to make one next

when my mother-in-law was living, she would make scrap quilts one after the other, and they were donated to a homeless shelter in Denver

Here's my latest "stash" busters, three baby girl quilts (two are for gifts for two little baby girls due into our extended family - one in April and and one in May). Love this idea of just "shopping" in my own sewing room and stash. It's liberating!

Pc's that were not big enough for a "matched" quilt. It turned out great. Then I did a scrappy half sq. triangle quilt. Love it. Will use them for Christmas Presents. so it is possible to use just scraps. marge PS. I still haven't used all my scraps up.

I spent a few afternoons with quilters learning how to piece and assemble various blocks and this was the first project they picked for me. Since then I have finished 7 other quilts but this is my only scrappy quilt so far, but not the last! I agree that these projects are great for donation. We also donated to Hospice and Neonatal units at the hospital. We sent about 80 quilts with Doctors without borders and that was a great way to use up all those kids prints that we end up with. I hung an organizer in my closet and organized my pieces by color.

I have a small room that use to be my sons. I have a wooden 12 cube piece of furniture. It works really well separating by color. That way you can quickly tell which stash to look for if your on the hunt. And which ones you need to share with friends, because the cloth is falling out of the bin. LOL!

hey, that is a great idea. im in.

I'm in as soon as I finish my mom's 80th b'day quilt..

Count me in also. My church group does quilts for Helping Hands, who help the homeless in our area. I'm sure they could use a few more quilts.. Thanks for the great idea on using up the bags and boxes of leftovers.

My stash is HUGE!! Totally out of control! I've made two kings and a couch throw just since Jan 10th from my stash and it doesn't even show. If I could make a full, queen, or king size once a week all year I might be able to whittle it down a bit. I'm in a Scraps and Strips club and this is exactly what we're doing.

Here's my scrappy quilt for March. I'd have to make about 50 more to make a dent in my stash.
