Back in Maine we used to go to a bakery in Alfred and they make their own breads and pastries. It's Notre Dame Bakery and Apple Orchards. Sine moving to Tennessee we can not find the apple squares and my hubby loves them. there about 3" x3" have a crust something like pie crust then apple filling or raspberry, strawberry then another crust on the top.Does anyone know how these are made. I know they make them in a sheet pan. I have 4 bushel of apples and would love to make some of these to freeze for latter use. I found a recipe but it didn't come up to what they have.

Glazed Apple Pie Bars.

Crust
2 ½ Cups Flour
1 teaspoon Salt
1 Cup butter or marg. Softened
1 Egg (separated, yolk beaten with enough milk to equal 2/3 Cup) reserve white

Filling
1 Cup Crushed corn flakes cereal
8 Cups cooking Apples (Granny Smith) cored, peeled and sliced
1 Cup sugar
1 ½ teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon nutmeg

1 reserved egg white
2 Tablespoons sugar
½ teaspoon cinnamon

Glaze
1 Cup powdered sugar
1 to 2 Tablespoons milk
½ teaspoon vanilla

Heat oven to 350
In medium bowl combine flour and salt. Cut in butter until crumbly.
With fork stir in egg yolk/milk mixture until dough forms a ball. Divide in half.
On lightly floured surface roll half of dough into 15 X 10 rectangle.
(I roll dough till its big enough to fit pan. I then place in pan and trim and fill in to cover bottom of cookie sheet) place on bottom of ungreased cookie sheet.
Sprinkle with the crushed cereal. Layer apples over cereal.
In a small bowl combine 1 cup sugar, 1 ½ teas cinnamon and ½ teas nutmeg.
Sprinkle over apples.
Roll remaining dough into 15 ½ X 10 ½ rectangle. Place over apples.
Beat egg white till foamy. Brush over crust.
In small bowl mix sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle over crust

Bake 45 to 60 min. until lightly golden brown.
Mix glaze ingredients and drizzle over crust after removing from oven while still warm.

This is delicious and my friend calls it Apple Sin...

Been to that same Bakery and it is wonderful. Love their raspberry squares especially. When I make mine, I just make same as apple pie and put in a square pan. Mine are good but not quite the same as that Bakery's ones.

There is always a pastry instead of a bar. This one is great!

It's more like a pie crust with an apple or other fruit filling. I tried the one from recipe goldmine and it's close. It doesn't have cornflakes in the crust. I remember they had it written on the walls of the bakery along with the bread recipes. Oh, there pastries are to die for and so is the bread.

I make the recipe with the cornflakes. It has been a favorite at our house for years.
