this is so easy and is one of my favorite meals, especially in winter. Great comfort food.

http://allrecipes.com//Recipe/army-s...ef/Detail.aspx

Ingredients

* 1 pound ground beef
* 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
* 1 cube beef bouillon
* 3/4 teaspoon salt
* 1 pinch ground black pepper
* 2 1/4 cups milk
* 1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Directions

Brown beef in a large skillet over medium high heat. Stir in flour, bouillon, salt and pepper. Saute all together for about 5 minutes or until flour is absorbed. Gradually stir in milk and Worcestershire sauce. Bring all to a simmer, stirring constantly. Cook until thickened, about 5 to 10 minutes. Serve hot!

I serve it over biscuits. It can also be served with toast, rice, noodles, etc.

We call it hamburg gravy. It's great over a big pile of mashed potatoes. They served this to us back in the 70's in school. Very filling.

I am an Air Forcer brat. We ate SOS many, many times. My family eats SOS now. Dad was a cook when he first went in the military.
I use water rather than milk. Bouillon does add some extra flavor. Over toast is my favorite, my husband like his over rice.

This sounds similar to the 'Smothered Steak' recipe we loved as children, but instead of ground beef, it was individual steaks, either bottom round, which was pounded until it was waffly and easy to eat, or "sizzle steaks". The gravy was intensified by cutting up an onion and browning it in the drippings. Then the flour was added, and the steaks re-introduced when the gravy was perfect. Oh, I'm hungry all over again, just thinking about this.

I forgot an onion is necessary. I have added bell pepper and celery. This will make it go a long further in needed.

Also #1 husband, who was iin the Air Force called Creamed Chipped Beef over Baking Powder Biscuits SOS. Love that too, but it is a tad on the salty side.

I also throw in a can of mushrooms into the Hamburger Gravy. Serve it with peas, mix the whole mess together on the plate. It truly is a comfort food that you would never, ever find on the Cooking Channel, eh? Edie
