Our fav for a big family dinner is baked spaghetti. Kids of all ages love it. Cheap, filling & very tasty.I ike TOH's recipe.
A big pot of ham & bean soup goes a long ways. So does veg soup, chili etc.Add a big pan of cornbread....just use a couple boxes of Jiffy mix.

Stuffed pepper soup using ground turkey instead of ground beef; lots of brown rice, fresh green bell pepper and tomatoes. yum!

When I was a kid my mom made a WEINER PIE. We had 6 in the family and mom was a stay at home mom (1950's) so economical meals were what we lived on and Weiner pie was our favorite. I've raised 2 husbands and
a houseful of kids and this weiner pie has never failed to please . It's also QUICK AND EASY.

WEINER PIE MADE WITH MASHED POTATOES
1 OR 2 pkgs. weiners, sliced and browned in fry pan
1 small onion browned with the weiners
2 cans cream of ?? Soup (We like celery/chicken)
1 to 2 Cans Milk or Water
About 10 med. potatoes boiled
butter or margarine for the potatoes

Make the mashed potatoes like you normally do. Set aside.

Brown sliced weiners on med low heat with onions. When onions are soft add the cans of cream soups to the fry pan and add 1 1/2 cans of milk or water to make a gravy. If the gravy is too thick, just add a bit more milk or water.

Pour the weiners and gravy into a deep, large casserole dish. Cover meat and gravy with the mashed potatoes and put in the oven and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or til heated through.

Serve with corn on the cob, canned corn or any other veggy you like. Hot rolls or bread are a nice addition to round out the meal. Enjoy!

Well, now that is one recipe I have never heard of, weiner pie, lol! BUT, I honestly know BF and our kids would love it. Hot dogs and mashed potatoes are both favorites around here! Thanks for the recipe!

One hint...when the Internet site called Top Secret Recipes opened, I got a recipe for our much loved Wendy's chile. It tasted just like the original. Wendy's cooked the meat, then WASHES it in warm water to take off the fat. (ORIGINAL RECIPE, but not now ) That alone might help a lot with a heart patient. Still tasted good.
And the frosty, I can make it at home. 3 ingredients. I removed the ice cream and added a ripe banana and half a blender full of ice.

The chicken rice caserole baked with cream of mushroom soup is always good, easy and inexpensive. Any type of dish making noodles, rice or potatoes the base works with some added meat, veggies and sauce. My children always loved spaghetti and lasagna. A main dish can be smaller if breads are added. Try day-old bread stores and discount stores such as Sams or Aldis.
