Birthday Cake -

Do you have a favorite or traditional kind of cake for your birthday? (or any other event?)

For me, it is a plain white angel food cake. My Mom or Grandma would make one for me from fresh eggs - of course, there were egg yolks left over - but I don't remember what they did with them.

The next best cake that my Mom would (rarely) make was poppy seed cake - with a custard filling and fluffy white (cooked) frosting.

Rhubarb cake is a current favorite - but it is not a "special event" cake.

The left-over yolks make wonderful noodles. Our entire family love 'em!
For T.Giving I will have 6 egg yolks make then cook in the broth an they will sit and eat them and there are never any left!

My birthday's in June and I always asked for strawberry shortcake. In the olden days, strawberries were only available in June.

I didn't like cake as a kid so my great aunt always made me lemon meringue pie for my birthday. When my kids came along and I started making birthday cakes for them I realized I didn't like cake because mom managed to make cakes as dry and tasteless the dessert:) Now my favorite cake is Boston Cream Pie.

cannyquilter 07-13-2017 12:56 AM

It was my birthday on Sunday and my daughter got me a lemon drizzle cake complete with candles I'm 62 it was only the second birthday cake I've had. Other was for my 21st.

Mkotch 07-13-2017 02:22 AM

My mom used to make a pound cake and cut it into several layers. She then made up some mocha whipped cream and used it to frost the layers and the whole cake. Yum!

My B'day was Sunday too! But I must say I have had lots of cake. My favorite is a mint chocolate chip. But my family likes hummingbird cake which I make at Thanksgiving.

For my birthday in July, I always make a cheesecake with fresh blackberries on top. Everyone else, (10 family members) orders a choc depression cake from me made with 100% whole wheat (bran and germ included). Must be made one or two days in advance so the bran can absorb moisture, and the cake turns out as moist as brownies.

Mom always made a chocolate cake from a Betty Crocker mix. Mom wasn't a fancy baker or cook but she did the best she could. I always liked a white cake but she made it a little too dry, devils food worked best.

It's not birthday cake in our family unless it's Overnight Cake with Mock Whipped Cream frosting.
Overnight cake is a mock angel food cake that really takes 2 days to make. You start by combining cake flour and sugar with boiling water, and letting it sit covered on the counter overnight. The next day you beat egg whites, almond flavoring and cream of tartar until stiff, then fold in the first mixture.
Mock whipped cream frosting is almost as fidgety. Boil flour and milk mixture, cool, and add to whipped butter, crisco and sugar mixture.
We were able to find a baker who would make this cake for our wedding. It was wonderful to have my favorite cake for our wedding.

My favourite birthday cake my mother made for me was a white cake with raspberry filling between 4 layers and iced with whipped cream, soooo good! My children's favourite birthday cake was Betty Crocker Cherry Chip. Everyday cake favourites are Banada bread, chocolate with chocolate icing and Rhubarb cake when it is in season.

nitramg 07-13-2017 05:55 AM

My favorite cake (as well as my older brothers) growing up was devil's food with caramel icing (which my grandmother always made from scratch on a cocoa-spice cake). Now it's a favorite of our two boys, as well as their spouses and children!

I'm always looking for an excuse to make Pistachio Inside-Outside cake! I need other people to help eat it so I don't eat the whole thing myself. You can do a Google search for the recipe. It's made with a package of Jell-O pistachio pudding. The best part is the pudding-frosting which I serve on the side and just dollop individual servings.

My birthday "cake" is strawberry-rhubarb pie. If the daughters are busy, my DH makes it for me. DH has 4 layer chocolate cake. I bake my Wacky cake in 2 9" pans and slice them in half. Then alternate the layers with chocolate pudding and chocolate butter cream frosting. Serve with chocolate ice cream, of course! Chocolate overload! Oh, and remember to NOT slice straight across the cake when serving. If the pudding is too soft, or the kitchen is too warm, it'll slide right off the serving plate. Ask me how I know.

I'm 75, and I always requested a Ukrainian Nut Torte for my birthday. There's one dozen eggs, a pound of ground nuts, 3 tablespoons of bread crumbs, and a pound box of powered sugar. Oh, it's heaven! It takes most of the day to make, but it is worth it! Now my 50 year old son requests it for his birthday!!

Fabricgator 07-13-2017 01:15 PM

German Chocolate Cake does it for me! Homemade, with that yummy coconut pecan frosting! Yum!

pocoellie 07-13-2017 06:30 PM

We don't bother with holidays or birthdays, just another day, although we do say "happy birthday"

JENNR8R 07-14-2017 06:07 AM

My son always wanted:

Upside Down German Chocolate Cake

1 cup Coconut
1½ cups chopped Pecans
1 German Chocolate Cake Mix
1 stick Butter, melted
1 lb. 10X Sugar
1 (8 oz.) package Cream Cheese, softened

Mix coconut and pecans
Sprinkle onto the bottom of greased 9 x 13” sheet pan
Mix cake mix according to box directions
Pour mix on top of coconut and pecans
Blend cream cheese, sugar and melted butter with a pastry blender
Teaspoon mixture over the top of the cake mix evenly
Bake at 300 degrees for one hour
Test with a toothpick for doneness

...until he found out that there was cream cheese in it. He has always been picky and just arbitrarily decided to eliminate cream cheese from his diet. Now he has decided that he's rather have shortbread cookies:

Shortbread Cookies

2-1/2 sticks Butter
1 cup Granulated Sugar
1 teaspoon salt
4 cups All-Purpose Flour

Mix butter and sugar together in a mixing bowl until well blended. Add salt and flour one cup at a time and mix until thoroughly blended.

Measure .08 ounces of batter on a scale, roll into a ball, and flatten on an ungreased cookie sheet with the bottom of a glass.

Bake in a 325 degree preheated oven for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and let cookies cool on cookie sheet for five minutes. Remove cookies with a spatula onto a cooling rack.

Frost cookies and press into sprinkles. Let air dry several hours before putting into a container.

Makes 43 cookies

Fruit cake. Heavy, rich, preferably with cherries and maybe nuts (particularly pecans or walnuts). My husband makes a good fruit cake, he adds goji berries. Our almost 2 yr old grandson loves it, so it is now known as Felix cake. Took some down to my youngest son's house last weekend in celebration of my first granddaughter's birth....now we have to figure out a cake for each of the others.

Rennie 07-14-2017 09:23 AM

My mom did not cook much, so we children always got a regular bakery birthday cake. After I married and started cooking/baking, I would make my Mom a Harvey Walbanger cake and she still asks for that today (she will be 99 in August). Since we only use the liquor to make the cake, and it does not take much, I had one bottle for at least 10 years (Galliano). But my DH likes an Italian Cream Cake. Really though, cakes are getting very expensive to make!

tranum 07-14-2017 04:23 PM

If I could have my pick, I'd have a plain dark chocolate with plain chocolate frosting.

lynnie 07-14-2017 04:43 PM

if I got my pick it would be orange cake with orange frosting, or angelfood cake with orange icing.
after that, any cake is my favorite.

Stitchnripper 07-14-2017 04:47 PM

My cake of choice is yellow cake and chocolate frosting

Jordan 07-19-2017 12:18 PM

German chocolate cake with that gooey coconut and pecan frosting for me. yum! yum!

cjsews 07-19-2017 01:12 PM

Oh I love that poppyseed cake. It was made for family get together on my mom's side often. I haven't had it in forever. After that my face is German chocolate cake

I guess I like chocolate the best. However, after 63 years of cake, this year I told Jim I would rather have a blueberry pie.

SusieQOH 07-27-2017 06:08 AM

My Mom always made me an angel food cake when I was growing up YUM
Now my husband gets one at a Japanese bakery. It's a white cake with whipped cream and strawberries. Very light and oh so good!

Irishrose2 08-13-2017 11:28 PM

I don't remember any special cake as a child. As an adult, I prefer cookies to cake. My husband's 'cake' was an apple pie, my oldest daughter's - cheesecake with cherry topping, second daughter - white cake with white decorator frosting, 3rd daughter - peach dessert of any kind, like a peach kuchen, 4th daughter - pineapple upside down cake, son - was homemade German chocolate, but decided that was too much several years ago, so switched to his deceased father's apple pie. For me - carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. That's one cake I do like. Any grandchildren I bake for get a white cake with decorator icing decorated with their current interest.

German chocolate cake with the coconut pecan frosting. Four out of the 5 of us had birthdays in Sept. and we were pretty tired of cake by the end.

My dad always says "it's not a birthday cake unless it's chocolate!", and they had five kids, so I've always associated birthday cakes with chocolate cake. I've made other "flavors" for my son's birthday (key lime, peanut butter, etc), but chocolate is my favorite.

My dad makes the birthday cake comment often enough, that I even made it a block in my parent's quilt:

One of my favorites! When I was a kid, the grocery store had German chocolate doughnuts, regular donate with chocolate glaze, then the center was filled with the coconut pecan frosting. I miss those doughnuts! I think they quit doing them when I was about five.

My teen daughters favorite cake and also her birthday cake is the One Bowl Chocolate cake recipe from the BHG cookbook also on
http://www.bhg.com/recipe/chocolate-...hocolate-cake/
My partner when young his cake use to be a big 3 tier chocolate cake with chocolate homemade frosting from a recipe from womans day magazine but lost his taste for it at middle age.
A second cake we all three like is the hot milk sponge cake also from BHG.com just simple no topping.
For myself when I was younger I used to do different cakes for my birthday. But these days I do not bake much.
I also homebake my fruitcake for Christmas. Sometimes I save a bit for my January birthday.
In my youth at home was birthday cakes where baked from Betty Crocker and Duncan Hines mixes from an american grocery shop.

toverly 11-13-2017 05:53 AM

Fresh coconut cake is my personal favorite. I usually try to make it around Christmas when there are lots of other people around to help me eat it. My son loves the Tuxedo cake that came out a few years ago. It's essentially a chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting, covered in chocolate ganache. My husband loves a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting on the sides and raspberry jelly on the top and between the layers.

Mariposa 11-20-2017 08:13 PM

My fave is homemade German chocolate cake. Homemade carrot cake with cream cheese frosting is a good one too!

Mariah 11-21-2017 08:20 AM

Never heard of a Lemon Drizzle Cake. Please fill me in, and maybe others!
Thanks, Mariah
