My sister shared a recipe for bug spray with me the other day that her SIL that owns a nursery shared with her. It WORKS!!!!

1/4 cup buttermilk
2 cups flour (either self rising or plain)
enough water to fill the rest of a gallon jug
Mix all this together and put in sprayer and spray your plants and bushes. We both have tried it out and it really works. You will see the difference!! Just shake it up real good so the flour doesn't settle to the bottom!!! I don't know if it kills the bugs or they just can't stand buttermilk. Try it!!

Hope it does work! We need something to use on plants around the backyard pond & this just might be it :)!.

You shold see the difference it made on my tomatoes. Those little killer black bugs were sucking the life out of them. I sprayed them and within just a couple of days they had grown several inches and was turning green again.

Does it work for June Bugs? They buffet on my roses.

How do you store the jug with what's left over?

Lady Diana 06-09-2011 05:12 AM

Does it leave a white residue on everything?

I'm definitely going to try this! Now, who has a recipe for bug spray for humans? The mosquitos, buffalo gnats, and biting flies are killing me, not to mention the price of buying gallons of OFF. Citronella doesn't work. There has to be a recipe for bug repellant somewhere:-|

I put Listerene and water 1:1 in a dollar store spray bottle. Works for us. I also spray the doorframes outside to discourage them from coming in the house. I get the cinnamon or mint so we don't smell mediciney :)

Thank you for the recipe. I'll be looking for your answers to the questions posted here.

i've heard that having a sheet of bounce in a pocket or on you will keep mosquito's away. havent tried it but will later on this summer.

Tweety2911 06-09-2011 12:11 PM

Thanks. Anything natural sounds great to me!

My DH has a terrible time with mosquitoes. He can be the only one standing in a group of people who is swatting at them while no one else seems to be bothered. Listerene, huh? Worth a try. Also, sure going to try the plant spray. I don't like to use pesticides at all especially with pets running in the yard. Thanks for these suggestions.

KatFish 06-09-2011 04:27 PM

Thanks. I will have to try this.

Patchworkmarion 06-09-2011 08:40 PM

Thanks for the recipes. Here in Alaska the mosquitoes are considered by some as our state bird. LOL

The dryer sheet helps....and if you are pregnant or nursing, you should stay away from things like Off. I am also the main skeeter attractor in our household. I did use the sheets way back when I was pregnant, and it sure helped!!!

I will be trying the veggie spray. Any idea how it works on cabbage worms? That seems to be our main bug problem...on anything cabbage....cabbage, broccolli, brussel sprouts, etc.

 I thought you meant to keep humans away! It gave me a good laugh when I realized what you really meant! I could use some of THAT at work if anyone invents any!

Val in IN 06-11-2011 06:07 AM

@ Lori: LOL!!! I really didn't mean to repel humans... well, I guess you're right, maybe SOME of them!!:-))

kat13 06-11-2011 07:02 AM

My cousin told me to use skin so soft mixed with listerine, haven't tried it yet but he uses it all the time.

theifner 06-11-2011 11:22 AM

what kind of bugs does it kill?

Jim's Gem 06-23-2011 09:01 PM

I hope this works to keep those disgusting tomato worms off of my tomato plants!!!!!

Thanks for the recipe

If mosquitoes are bugging you while outside either grilling or picnicing, put a white paper or regular plate somewhere near you with lemon joy dishwashing detergent and a little bit of water....doesn't take much of either. My dh grilled in N. AR and the mosquitoes were trying to carry him off and we put this on the step of the camper and kept them away. (He's a mosquito magnet)
