What was the cabbage and noodles recipe anyway. I know I really liked it but I forgot how to make it.
I am a senior citizen with a very good memory But it is short!!

craftybear 10-03-2011 01:11 PM

did you find your recipe yet?

QuiltE 10-03-2011 01:23 PM

Sounds like an interesting combo ... cabbage and noodles?

granky 10-04-2011 04:03 AM

Maybe this is it. If not, it's a tasty recipe anyway!

Halushki

You will need a very large skillet…

1 large head of cabbage, shredded
1 large onion, chopped (more if you really like onions…I do!)
1 pound fatty bacon
1 pound egg noodles
salt and pepper to taste

Cook egg noodles as directed on package. Drain. Meanwhile, cut bacon into small pieces and fry until crisp. Remove from skillet and remove part of the bacon fat (reserving at least two tablespoons) and add copped onion. Fry until tender. Add shredded cabbage and cook until cabbage is tender. Add cooked egg noodles. Mix thoroughly. Enjoy!

Forgot to tell you to add the bacon back in! (although you probably knew to do that!)

Another good recipe is cabbage (well cooked) mashed into potatoes w/s&P and butter. I think it is Irish. A little garlic is good too.

If it's Irish, it's COLCANNON
If it's English, it's BUBBLE AND SQUEAK
If it's Polish, it's HALUSKI
If it's on my plate, it's ALL MINE!

OmaForFour 10-04-2011 12:20 PM

Or mine if I get to the plate first. LOL! I sure do love that dish and like lots of pepper on it as well. I need to make that this week!

Oh, thanks for the reminder. I love it too, but we use Polish Kielbasa cut into little disks in ours. Mmmm-mmm.

Had this for Sunday dinner w/o the noodles.

Okay, I am buying cabbage tomorrow. Both recipes sound really good.

This is such an interesting Quilting Board. I never would've thought about cabbage and noodles. Cabbage and bacon, yes, but never noodles. Guess I've lived a very sheltered life. I better start living!

Some more cabbage favourites ...
* Lazy Man's Cabbage Rolls
* Unrolled Egg Rolls
* Cabbage Cake

Pzazz 10-10-2011 05:49 AM

Hmmmmm....we have 1/2 dozen cabbage from our garden in the fridge. Methinks a little colcannon is in order tonight!! I haven't made that for ages. Thanks for the reminder. DH dug spuds a couple of days ago, so fresh spuds in this dish will be sooo good too.

I use bits and pieces of ham in place of bacon. Sometimes even a handful of choppped deli ham. Cook the cabbage in butter first then add the ham.

Funny! We do a variation of this same recipe in my family. Egg noodles, JIMMY DEAN SAGE SAUSAGE, and cabbage. It always hits the spot.

yep, and sometimes with bacon, sometimes with ham and on the last week of the month, just a little butter!

walkswithwolves 11-08-2011 10:01 PM

Pickle,
I make fried cabbage and noodles,
I cut up cabbage and put in pan,and fry with a small onion.
While cavvage is frying I cook my noodles, when cooked, drain and add to cabbage.
I add a little curry powder. Let all fry till starts to brown.

bakermom 11-09-2011 12:11 AM

We don't use bacon in ours. We fry the cabbage in crisco, then stir in the noodles. mom used to make it during Lent for a meatless meal. Good Hungarian dish.
I'm thinking I will try it with the bacon though- you can never have too much bacon!

I've never tried something like this but it sounds like something I would like. About how much to cabbage to taters would you use?
half as much? quarter?

nannyrick 11-09-2011 02:43 PM

Sounds like a "must try"

twogeebs 11-13-2011 01:14 PM

My inlaws were from Czechoslovakia, and taught me to make Haluski with potato dumplings, (made with mashed potatoes) and would put the dumplings into fried cabbage & onions.
