Cake With Chocolate Pudding on the Bottom
Today I made a chocolate pudding cake and shared it with my brother and his wife. The cake is mixed in the cake pan and then smoothed out and a mixture of brown sugar and cocoa is scattered over the batter. Before putting in the oven you pour a couple cups of hot water or coffee over the mixture and bake it. When the cake comes out there is a cake like top and pudding on the bottom. It is so good served with ice cream or whipped topping. The recipe calls for nuts but I did not add them and instead sprinkled a half cup of mini chocolate chips over the batter before adding the brown sugar and cocoa. My sister in law told me that she remembers when her mother made a similar cake that had a white or yellow layer on top with chocolate pudding on the bottom. I was not familiar with this and wonder if anyone has a recipe for something similar to this. She told me her mother made it often but she has never had a recipe and would love to be able to have it again. Would anyone have any ideas for me? I would love to find the recipe for her.

I haven't heard of this and would like the recipe?? Can you share?
My mother used to make a baked dessert with brown sugar, hot water and raisins - there was a batter you mixed right in the pan with a fork, then put the raisins and brown sugar on top, and poured boiling water over - baked for 1/2 hour. She called it "half hour pudding"... it was delicious! I must make some soon! |
My mom used to make pudding cake! I haven't heard of it in years. It was soooo good!

Yes!! This was my favorite growing up too, but I have never heard of the white cake version. I will be keeping an eye out to see if anyone has a recipe.

This recipe has been in my family for decades.
Chocolate Lush Cake 1 cup Flour 2 tsp Baking powder 1/2 tsp Salt 3/4 Cup Sugar 2 TBS Cocoa 2 Tbs Melted shortening 1/2 Cup Milk 1 tsp Vanilla Pre heat oven 350 degrees. Grease and flour 8x8 in baking dish. Mix dry ingredients well. Add shortening, milk and Vanilla, combine well. Place batter evenly in baking dish. Syrup: 1 and 3/4 Cup Hot water, add 3-4 TBS Cocoa, mix well. Pour over batter. Do Not Mix (water/cocoa mix) Into Batter. Bake 45 min. Serve warm with Vanilla ice cream, Cool Whip, Whipped Cream. Enjoy! |
My recipe reads the same only I use 4 tablespoons cocoa in the cake. I mix 1 c. brown sugar with the cocoa and sprinkle it over the cake batter. Then pour the water or hot coffee over the mixture without stirring and bake. Does your recipe really call for no sugar in the syrup? Just want to make sure something hasn't been left out.

Last time I used this recipe it seemed fine.

Thanks for the reply. If it works like you say it would certainly be much better for those who wish to control sugar consumption. I will try it and see how I like it. We all consume too much sugar so that would be great. We can learn so much from one another. Thanks again!

Perhaps you could use this cake base and then the chocolate sauce part? |
I will try this one. I plan to add cocoa to the pudding that one is to make and will see what happens. It looks like a good start. I have not found a recipe like this before to it is sure worth a try. Thank you for posting!
