I think this may be what use to be called Old Fashioned Chocolate cake by Hersheys. There is also a frosting for it. It is my favorite chocolate cake and icing. Not too sweet or chocolaty.

mycatsmom 03-10-2014 07:30 AM

It sounds wonderful. I will have to try it.

llong0233 03-10-2014 08:13 AM

This recipe makes a truly homemade, moist and rich cake. I first tried it just a few months ago and I'm sorry it took so long. It has body, texture, flavor and is moist. Better, and not much more difficult to make, than a box cake. Thanks for the reminder.

You're right...I had everything I needed in my pantry which was a great plus and it is not hard at all. It makes a great tasting cake.

Just checked your chocolate cake recipe. Oh my gosh! Does that look incredible. I would give my right arm for a piece right now and I just had breakfast. Well probably not my right arm but I know I would have a large piece if it were available.

DottyD 03-11-2014 07:15 AM

ooh yum - have to try this !!

crazythread 03-11-2014 08:26 AM

I have been making this cake for about 50 years or so. My Mom made it before that. It was always our special birthday cake when I was growing up. It became my husband and son's. It is not a birthday without it. I used this recipe to make my son's wedding cake. Everybody wanted to know where I got this scrumptious cake...Aha a family secret I said........................

Needles 03-11-2014 08:48 AM

I think this is the one that was on Hershey's cocoa box for years and years. However, here again, I've quit using their products. It's another American company who 'shuffled off to Mexico,' not all of it but enough that put many American's out of a job. Disgusting. Oh, that's funny -- I just made this cake yesterday! We absolutely love it in our family and my neighbors do to. I've made it for years, too, and I cut it out of a magazine along with the icing recipe. I wish I were not trying to lose weight. I haven't had a piece yet and will try to continue resisting but it's hard!

I know what you mean. Husband likes something sweet so I end up making cookies or cake. This was too hard to resist though.

I actually did buy some instant expresso powder that I could add to it, maybe.

I made this cake again but this time, it wasn't as moist. But still rich. Don't know why. Maybe weather affected it.

This is a great cake recipe. My dear late mother in law made it for all the birthdays in her family, with 7 minute icing on top- YUM!

We make this cake a lot as it is often requested. I enjoy making it in a bundt pan Delicious!

cindynvb 04-03-2014 06:36 PM

Sounds good. I'm going to try it.

I like the idea of the bundt pan for this cake too.

I can vouch for this cake. I made it into a sheet cake on Monday. There is only the two of us and what remains is still very moist and just the perfect degree of chocolate. Also made the frosting suggested. Two thumbs up.

Good to hear. There's only us too, but it still didn't last very long. That's why I have to only make it occasionally. Wouldn't mind making it for easter but there's just too much going on to get ready for that anyway.

I made this cake this morning. The cake turned out rather "heavy", in between a brownie and a cake. Maybe it's supposed to be that way? Or maybe it's the humidity or something? It tastes okay, but the "heaviness" surprised me.

The frosting is exceptional! I think, next time, I'll use a different recipe for the cake, but the same frosting recipe.

Thanks for posting it! :)

We've been doing a lot of heavy duty spring cleaning (like cleaning out the kitchen cabinets and cleaning everything in them, etc) or I'd be making this for Easter. I just hate to mess the kitchen up right now. Maybe after Easter I'll make it again

Looks fabulous!

RedGarnet222 04-24-2014 05:25 AM

You are so right! This is my cake recipe too. I use the miracle whip cake recipe and the Hershey's frosting recipe on the can. Even more moist and chocolate taste.

ube quilting 04-24-2014 01:46 PM

My aunt made her chocolate cake with sour cream and oh how I wish I had that recipe. Very moist and tasty. It went with her to the great beyond!
peace

What a shame. I don't have any special recipes but if I did, I hope I would share it with someone for the future.
