Ok folks, I don't measure for this recipe but it is easy and wonderful!

Take any variation of apples that you like and make applesauce or you can just buy a gallon of it from Sams' or other store. If you get the natural applesauce, you may have to add a little sugar. I like using Delicious, Gala, Ida Red's apples to make my applesauce.

So, you pour the applesauce into the crock pot. I fill my crock pot about 1/2 inch from the rim where the lid goes. Add some cinnamon, ground cloves and a little allspice. By the time i'm done adding my spices, the sauce has taken on a darker tinge. Stir it real good and taste it.

Turn your crock pot on high. Take a piece of aluminum foil and poke some holes in it to let steam out. Lay the foil on top but do not seal the edge. The foil is to let the steam out and prevent splattering.

Stir it real good every couple of hours, foil on top... then leave it on medium overnight. In the morning, the mixture will be cooked down to at least half the pot, very thick, very dark and very delicious! It should be as thick as cold pudding when it is done. In the morning, if you think it needs more spices, add some and cook for a few more hours. I wont hurt anything.

We eat it on biscuits, toast, pancakes and my grandson will eat it out of the jar. I have canned it but it NEVER lasts more than a few days so I just put it in the fridge. If the word gets out that I have made some, I get numerous calls. Besides tasting wonderful, your house will smell like apple pie!

Enjoy!

Stupid question but what time do you usually start this? Early in the am or towards evening? I am headed to Sam's this weekend and will pick up a can of apple sauce.

Thanks for the post. I love apple butter and haven't made it in a long time. I use to make mine from applsauce also. So much easier than cooking the apples down and putting through the food mill.

Let me know how you like it. I tell you, this recipe never goes wrong. I like using lots of cinnamon and cloves. The longer it cooks, the darker and creamier it gets.

Well, never did get apples but the neighbors gave me a huge bag of pears this weekend. I peeled about half of them and that filled up the crockpot. I added a bit of cinnamon and a little br sugar, now to see how it does. I need to take the top off though and put the foil on it. next week the apple butter since we are off on vacation in the mountains and that will be soooooo good up there. Smells wonderful already.
