I remember delicious date nut bread baked in a can. Do anyone know a recipe?
thanks,
Jo Ann

I too remember the Dromedary date and nut roll. It was a true treat for us kids. Obviously I am no longer a kid since I can remember this wonderful, delicious product.

I have searched for this recipe, and while I have come up with a few that are similar, the taste just isn't the same. Will watch this thread and hope someone comes up with just the perfect ingredients.

I don't know if you're still looking for this recipe, since your request was posted 2 years ago. I have an original Nabisco Dromedary recipe pamphlet that my mother used years ago as I was growing up to make this bread each year for the holidays. I have continued that tradition by making several loaves each Christmas season to share with my siblings. I don't know anything about the "canned" part of your request, but here is the original recipe as presented in the pamphlet by Dromedary....ENJOY!!!

OLD-FASHIONED DATE AND NUT BREAD#2
Makes 1 loaf

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup water
1/3 cup Blue Bonnet margarine (that's how it's listed in the original recipe)
1 (8-ounce) package Dromedary Chopped Dates or Dromedary Pitted Dates, snipped
3/4 cup Planters Walnuts, chopped
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

In small bowl, stir together flour, sugar, baking soda and salt; set aside.

In small saucepan, over medium-high heat, bring water and Blue Bonnet Margarine to a boil; remove from heat. Stir in Dromedary Dates; let stand 15 minutes. In large bowl, stir together date mixture, Planters Walnuts, eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour mixture just until blended. Pour into a greased and floured 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan.

Bake at 350 for 50 to 55 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack for 10 minutes. Remove from pan; cool completely on wire rack.

Starting in the 60's my mom made these using Campbell's soup cans. More times than not she used half raisins and half dates.
Boil 2/3 c water. In a bowl 1/2 stick butter, 1/2 lb dates and 2/3 c sugar. Mix well. Add a slightly beaten egg and 1 cup walnuts. Sift 1 3/4 c flour with 1/4 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp baking soda. Add to the date mixture. Mix well. Grease 5 small cans, or 2 large cans. Fill the cans 2/3 full and press down with a spoon. Place the cans on a cookie sheet and then place another greased cookie sheet over the top of the cans. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 45 min. Let stand for about 10 min. before removing the bread from the cans. Eating warm is best!

Hi, if you are still looking for a date bread recipe baked in tin cans, here is my mothers recipe. I make it often, using 4 tin cans, the size veggies come in, 15 oz I think. It is great for gifts or traveling, serve as is or with cream cheese or butter. I think this recipe was popular during the war, only 1 tbsp butter.

Prepare 4 tin cans by greasing and lightly flouring.
Combine 1 tbsp butter
2 1/2 to 3 cups mixture of dates, raisens, nuts etc.
1 tsp soda
Over this pour 1 cup boiling water. Stir and let cool
Cake - Beat 2 large eggs until light
Slowly add 1 cup sugar and 1 tsp lemon or orange
extract.
Stir together 2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
Add the dry ingredients to egg mixture, stir in the nut/date
mixture
Pour into the 4 tin cans, bake at 325 for 55 min
I let them cool for a few minutes and remove from tins and finish cooling on rack.

I always make my breads (pumpkin, banana, date nut, whatever) in vegetable cans. I started baking in cans years ago when money was short and we did not have any means to get regular baking pans. My family thinks it is cool to have "round" little loafs of pumpkin bread.

To your next Nut-Date bread recipe, try adding a little molasses. Don't know if its the taste you're looking for, but I use it in mine and it's great

I love all the interest in making these breads. I plan to start making some soon.....as soon as I have some empty cans. Do you have to open the bottom end and push the bread out, or does it come out easily without doing that?

You will need to grease and flour the can (just as you would a regular baking pan), bake and then cool for approx 3-5 minutes. Once cool, turn upside down, tap the bottom, and the contents will just slide out.

For quick date-nut bread, buy 1 Pillsbury Date bread mix and 1 Pillsbury Nut bread mix. Mix both according to directions, then mix the 2 together. Bake.

Oh my, this was a real grown up treat in my family. My mom would make it for dad. Still have her recipe on her own recipe card. Much the same as others posted here. Anyone ever try using prunes instead?

I have made this for nearly 60 years, using Mother-in-Law's recipe. BUT have you tried to take the end out of the new style soup cans? Impossible as far as I can see.
The pull tab cans are not even easy to open, let alone get the end out of the can. My can opener will NOT remove the end of these cans. Soup cans were the choice because they made a smaller, neater slice. Date/Nut Bread with Cream Cheese was a favorite winter dessert.

Hey June, the tall more narrow spaghetti sauce tins are a good size too. As are small coffee cans. I agree, some of the cans are hard to open and some can openers are a big pain.

You can bake any date nut bread recipe in a can.

You can also bake homemade bread in flower pots. There's a restaurant in Western Kentucky by Kentucky Lake that serves flower pot bread with strawberry butter. OMG it's to die for. They also serve their drinks in pint mason jars.

june6995 08-27-2011 03:33 AM

While I know it can be baked in almost any kind of container, I still like the soup can size for neat little slice of Date/Nut bread. This also gives me a good excuse to no longer have to bake. At my age, it is time to knock a few baking jobs off my list of house hold chores. i cannot bake and sew and I would rather be piecing quilts.

The strawberry butter is also served in other places around the area, and especially in Indiana. I recall having it several years ago.

This is how I remember, I worked with a lady back in the early 1980's and she gave me a recipe using the soup cans
