Date pinwheels

Found this recipe from a local recipe site. Added some lightly chopped walnuts.
1/2 cup sugar

Dough:

1/2 cup Crisco

1 cup brown sugar

1/2 tsp baking soda

1 egg

2 cup flour

1/2 tsp salt

1 tsp vanilla

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp ground cloves

Filling:

Chop dates.

Add water and sugar to dates and cook over medium heat until thickened.

Dough:

Mix Crisco and brown sugar.

Add baking soda, egg, flour, salt, vanilla, cinnamon, and cloves.

Roll 1/2 of dough out to 8x10-inch rectangle.

Spread dough with 1/2 of date mixture.

Roll up like a jelly roll from long side.

Repeat.

Wrap rolls in waxed paper and refrigerate overnight.

Cut into 1/2 inch slices.

Bake 8-10 minutes in a 400 degree oven.

My DHs fav cookie. I like to add grated orange peel to filling when it has cooled down.
