Do you remember this Spice Cake?
When I was little (in PA/Ohio 1950/60's) we used to get a spice cake (not sure it was called that) from the grocery store that was a dense spice cake with cream cheese icing on it? The shape was about 3x8" on cardboard...probably came form the bakery section. Does anyone remember this?
I would like to find a recipe that is like that...so if you know what a I want and have a recipe...can you share it please? |
Yes I do and so do a lot of people on QB. Look under the title .....Looking for Spanish Bar Cake and you will find several recipes that are similar.

Our wedding cake was a Spice cake ..that was over 36 yrs. ago.
|
I grew up in Chicago in the 50's/60's, and loved that cake! It was made by the Dolly Madison Baking Co. and was called spicecake.
|
I remember it well, it was sold at the local A & P and it was called Spanish Loaf, it was very good. Probably you would find more cake versions with Spanish Bar Cake and I'd Google A & P's Spanish Loaf first, then Bar Cake. There is also a copycat recipe site you may find it under.
|
I'm drooling just thinking about the Spanish Bar cake we used to buy from the A & P Store in the 1950's. Now, I must leave and hunt up the recipe per your suggestions... Thanks :-)

Check this one out. It says it's from the Pittsburg Tribune. If so, it may be close to what you are looking for. |
While we are strolling down Memory Lane, any of you ice cream makers come up with a copycat version of Isaly's Maricopa Ice Cream? It had a beige color from either a swirl of Caramel or Butterscotch and had a salty-sweet flavor.

Yes, they were called Skyscrapers and they were only a dime, that was a lot of ice cream, the scoop was shaped like a trowel instead of round. Klondikes were also from Isaly's. That was some good creamy ice cream. Sorry for diverging from Spanish Bar Cake.

Yes, McKeesport, PA, 30 miles from Pittsburgh, our Isaly's was in White Oak across the Blvd from McKeesport.
I lived in CA for 10 years, San Diego, then El Cajon, CA. I've been to Ocean City. |
A&P Markets - had forgotten about them. There was one in Westwood, Calif. just down from my dad's business and I remember it was big enough for just about anything you needed - but small enough to care and be a "local" neighborhood-style market atmosphere. Aren't memories fun? My hubby and I both like just about any style of spice cake. :-)

Our local grocery store, Acme, still makes the spanish bar cake, yum. I remember my parents buying it at the local A&P. Does anyone remember the vanilla flavoring that A&P sold? Mom swore by the stuff with her baking.
|
my Dad was a store manager for the A&P and i LOVE spanish bar cake as well as a pineapple kuchen that was also made under the Jane Parker label ....lots of good memories :)
|
It was called a Spanish ar Cake. My Mom has a recipe that is really close. ALSO, there is a grocery store that still sells something almost exactly like it. Shop and Save is the grocery store.
|
I remember that cake. It had little ridges in the frosting. Spice cake is still one of my favorites, but I use a 7 minute type frosting made with brown sugar. Yum!
|
I remember these Spanish Bar Cakes from when I was a kid. A&P sold them.

Have you ever tried peanutbutter frosting on a spice cake? Wonderful!!!!!!
|
Oooohhhh...I remember those spice cake bars...yummy! AND I grew up drinking Isaly's milk and I loved the treat of getting a skyscraper ice cream cone! When I was 9 I would walk to a store to spend my allowance on one. I grew up in the suburbs of Youngstown, OH.

Any of you have a recipe for a corn casserole .It was made with kernel corn eggs bread milk butter and no cream style corn.I googled but nothing came close.

Yes, we had two Isaly's, one in White Oak and one downtown McKeesport. I'm sure your husband thought 'Jumbo' was elephant meat! How about a gumband? I agree those childhood memories sure make you wistful, don't know why Isaly's went out of business, they had the best ice cream, sherbert and chipped ham.

OK here is my review...I tried the A&P Spanish Bar Recipe someone listed...and it was good, but not exactly as I remember it. It seemed too cakey...I remember it being more moist. But it looked like it and was certainly good. Here is a picture of mine.
Also....I would suggest cutting the recipe in half since this made a 2 tier 9x13 cake....enough to feed a big group! |
I remember sitting in the A&P grocery cart holding this cake to make sure it didn't get squished - GREAT memory!
|
I posted the recipe to a previous discussion
The distinct flavor and color comes from the addition of two level T of cocoa iAds a buttercream frosting with marshmallow fluff |
Yes, I remember the Spice Cake.
I think Hostess used to sell the individual servings for lunches etc. |
Me too!!
