Hahaha, just tonight I put a little water in the jar and shook it to get the rest of the spaghetti sauce out. I must be a genius!

sassey 11-06-2012 06:47 PM

i too was raised very frugal my mom taught me a lot of tips to extend things futher and I still use them HOWEVER one thing that used to really bug me was people putting water in a ketchup bottle used to tell my dh if Mr heinz wanted more water in the ketchup he would put it in. lol however I would stand the bottle upside down to let it all drain if you have patience it will eventually all drain out

crtwelvecats 11-06-2012 07:20 PM

that is so funny. I don't just do that in the kitchen but with shampoo even . when i was working for a catering couple also found out that when we ran out of whipped butter for a wedding just take the regular butter or margerine put it in a mixer and add a few ice cube at a time till whipped. now the question is why it is more expensive at the store?

Caswews 11-07-2012 06:08 AM

Well I love the magazine you are talking about and always wanted to attend one of their cooking schools .. But alas umm maybe not so much now !LOL I learned that years and I do mean years ago when Mom was on food stamps as she had cancer and couldn't work. I did alot of the cooking in the family, so waste not want not.

Annaquilts 11-07-2012 06:42 AM

My mom thought me to cut open those plastic bottles to get the last of it out.

rosalind 11-07-2012 06:54 AM

Did happen to know this but...........this might be why people are afraid to ask questions. None of us know anything until someone tells us. One of my grandchildren didn't know what a broom was. Some don't know what an iron is for etc.
Maybe we could help, not make fun of.

I think the soap is too thick, so pour half into another pump container and add water to both. Gently swirl the water/ soap mixture....now you have 2 bottles of hand soap.

I will not repeat all the snide remarks from our husbands about learning to cook at our ages!!! We said if they wanted to eat again they should keep quiet!!! Anyway we went to the event and enjoyed tasty samples, received a few free nick-nacks, laughed at the comedian, and won a years subscription to the magazine. We watched the cooking demonstrations and whispered among ourselves at what we could substitute for their very expensive ingredients. Then came the 'clincher". The speaker promised to give us the "best tip ever" to use when cooking. We waited through the whole long selling bit and finally he said to get ready to write it down. Pencils were poised, breaths held, eyes glued on him and here it came................."When you have a bit of sauce left in a jar, add a few spoons of water, shake it and you will get more out." HUH? THAT WAS THE BEST TIP EVER? My friends and I looked around at all the hundreds of women, many our age, who were frantically writing and nodding to each other and saying what a great idea. We were stunned! Doesn't everyone know this?

Well, I do and when it is a pasta sauce use red or white wine and give it a shake voila even better pasta sauce :)

Grace MooreLinker 11-07-2012 07:38 AM

have rinsed jars and cans for years.

Sandra in Minnesota 11-07-2012 10:36 AM

Duh! Guess we just store these things in the back of our non-electronic brains, and use these ideas when we can.

Yeah, but I'd like potatos fried with onion and cream corn too.

LenaBeena 11-07-2012 12:48 PM

Did not mean to ridicule anyone, we were just expecting to learn a new hint, not something we already knew. But seems like many of the others did not know this. This morning I mentioned this to a friend and she said she would NEVER, EVER put a spoonful of water in her jar of sauce or whatever, as it would surely ruin it! But then she "cooks" but heating things already prepared in the microwave. I don't call that cooking. Guess I'm just old fashioned !

Slow2Sew 11-07-2012 01:30 PM

That sounds like a trap to me to get you to stay longer.

RugosaB 11-07-2012 02:29 PM

I've been doing this for years, but when we were newlyweds, and poor, we used this same method in our remodeling:
I shouldn't say we, because I had nothing to do with this:
We bought an old house and really wanted to paint the green living room walls. So, we painted using Sears paint, $10 a gallon. He got the room nearly done, and decided he was going to make that last gallon of paint last to the end, so he added water!!!!!
There were a few spots that the green could be seen through the tan.
We laugh about it now

karate lady 11-07-2012 03:14 PM

Just another case of "been there...done that.!"............LOL

meanmom 11-07-2012 03:29 PM

Well duh who doesn't know that. I thought you were going to say the best cooking tip ever was to get your husband to take you out to dinner

Landers 11-07-2012 03:42 PM

So Funny! it would be my DH dragging mt to this cooking school. Glad I don't cook. Ha! Ha!

lbc 11-07-2012 04:54 PM

This makes me think of all the tips I read in magazines where people are paid $25 - $100 for their tips and they are things I have been doing forever. lol

KarenR 11-07-2012 05:02 PM

I did not even need to attend cooking school to know that tip.

So do I! I cut the bottom from the plastic containers, after squeezing as much as possible from them, then just stick my fingers inside and ream the rest out as needed then put the tube in a "used" and "washed" plastic bag to keep the product fresh until I use it all. It is a little bit of trouble but I can use some things for another week or so depending on what it is.

ptquilts 11-08-2012 04:51 AM

That is SO funny!! I really did LOL!

I do all the things the previous posters mentioned, PLUS, I will pry out that last bits of deodorant (solids) from the container and press them onto a new stick. Then when you are applying it, lean over the bathroom sink in case pieces fall off. Stick them back on if they fall off.

Also should mention DH has the world's largest collection of spatulas and is always finding more. He needs the perfect spatula for each jar he empties. He is so tight he can squeeze a nickel until the Indian rides the buffalo.

Oh, Gram, you throw out garments! Where do you get dust cloths, scrub rags, carpet strings and quilt pieces?:(

Oops - didn't mean throw out - meant take out of use as a garment and make into a cleaning rag or, in the case of jeans, patches for other jeans.......thanks for catching my error.....lol

LenaBeena 11-08-2012 12:07 PM

Oh yes reusing Christmas wrapping paper! I snatch it up soon as its opened and carefully fold it up for next year. But one time my son and daughter got together and "gifted" me with a box full of new paper. Then my son said he thought this sheet has been used enough. It still had a sticker on it. He is now 40 years old, a college professor and his gift tag read "To Jeffy From Santa". I agreed it had been used for many years. But then I saved it again!

cathyvv 11-08-2012 12:58 PM

So the speaker was a comedian, right?

RugosaB 11-09-2012 06:47 AM

I have a small pair of scissors in the bathroom that is used to cut the toothpaste tube to get the 5 brushings that are still left in a tube that other people (read HUSBAND) would throw away

LOL right back. When my DM passed away my brother asked if I wanted her sewing things. Of course I did, I learned to sew on her 1950 Kenmore. He delivered a pickup truck load. Now I have the box of zippers Mom ripped and saved and the (seems like) 120,000 buttons in tins. I recognize the button sets tied together with cord or threaded on safety pins as the ones from my grandmother's button stash. I also have bundles of cards with 8" of seam binding, snaps (some salvaged from garments), hook & eye sets and elastics of various weights and lengths.

I have brought myself to discard all the elastic with rotten rubber.

Me too (want some beans and cornbread)! My mother was born in 1923. I was born in 1964. Therefore I definitely picked up some frugal ways from her. I always add a little water to the last of the dish soap to get all of it out. If the handsoap is getting low, I add a wee bit of water to that too. Although mostly I use dish soap in all the hand soap dispensers anyway. I am to cheap to buy a special hand soap. :)

cwessel47 11-10-2012 09:18 AM

I re-use aluminum foil all the time. Not the Dollar Store variety, of course - but if you are just covering a casserole or something - why not? I re-use freezer bags too. But getting that extra bit out of the sauce jar! Honestly - what will they think of next???!!!

Mousie 11-11-2012 04:07 PM

LOL!
here's another tip: don't walk through the cow pasture barefooted!
I bet that guy does :D

Twisted Quilter 11-19-2012 06:13 PM

I even knew that and I can't cook! :D
