I love making treats for my dogs. This one is a hit with all of them.

Dog Chicken and Cheese Biscuits

2 cups water
1 chicken leg, skin and bones removed (I've also used a boneless and skinless chicken breast fillet)
3 cups whole-wheat flour
1/2 cup shredded low-fat Cheddar Cheese
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 egg


1. Pour the water into a small pan and set the chicken in it. Bring to a boil and simmer until the chicken is fully cooked, 10 to 15 minutes. Set the cooked chicken aside; reserve 3/4 cup of the cooking liquid.

2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine the flour, cheese, oil, and egg; mix well.

3. Shred the chicken meat; str into the dough. Add the reserved cooking liquid; mix until completely combined.

4. On a floured surface, knead the dough until it is firm.

5. Roll the dough to a 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with the cookie cutter of your choice. Transfer the biscuits to a baking sheet.

6. Bake for 50 minutes. Turn off the heat; let the biscuits stand in the oven until hard, 1 to 2 hours.

Yes, I use the doggie bone cutter. Last time I made these, I used the cookie cutter in the shape of a foot. lol.

Here is one I use. I figure they don't need the sugar. The neighbor's English Sheep dog ‘Max’ climbed up into their cabinets when they were out to get to them. He ate the entire three dozen he’d gotten for Christmas and of course wanted more.

Dog biscuits

3 ½ cups all-purpose flour*
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup rye flour
2 cups bulgar (cracked wheat)
½ cup non-fat dry-milk
1 tablespoon salt**

1 package yeast, dissolved in ¼ warm water
1 pint warmed chicken stock
1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon milk

Mix dry ingredients then add wet, knead for 3 minutes or until it becomes a stiff dough. Roll out, cut (or shape if desired). Bake on sheets in a 300-degree oven for 45 minutes, turn off oven and leave overnight till ‘bone’ dry.

Store in an airtight container.

*Unbleached white works just as well and is better for them.
**You can drop the salt a bit if you want.

:oops: i feel like such a dill..i was just quickly skimming through all the different recipes and you know how you read it but dont really?
Maybe it is just us aussies but when i read dog chicken and cheese biscuits i had to take a second look because i thought you meant dog, chicken and cheese biscuits!! (meaning dog meat, chicken meat and cheese) now you see why i feel like a dill...does anyone out there make cat biscuits? i suppose you could just put tuna or something in the recipe? and i dont mean cat meat biscuits just incase anyone isnt reading correctly....
