Favourite sandwiches

I am having a meatloaf sandwich for lunch. It got me thinking of what some of my unusual but tasty sandwiches I like. I enjoy a toasted sardine, a beef tongue sliced thin, bologna and pickle spread, roasted pepper sandwich....what are some of yours?

charley26 08-10-2020 10:01 AM

Egg mayonnaise,
Brie and grape,
Hummus and salad,
Cheese and onion,
Toasted cheese,
Welsh rarebit (open)
Egg salad,
Avocado, tomato and lettuce,
Tomato and cucumber,
Banana,
and, just butter and jam, as a real comfort when nothing else will do.

I love sandwiches but don't get much bread these days... bologna and pickle spread would be very much like Olive Loaf. a personal fav most people groan at. My husband can make the most amazing grilled sandwiches full of butter and other things, I usually go for toasted versus grilled.

Reuben sandwich open faced -- half the bread! Love rye bread in general, if I can get it as a toast option I like it with Orange Marmalade. Another rye classic, braunschweiger (liverwurst with bacon) on dark rye with crisp green lettuce and red onion slices.

We had some left over keto buns recently and some smoked salmon along with a jar of capers and an onion in the fridge... also would have been nice on rye bread.

Weird things that make sense -- salmon sandwiches from canned salmon (made like tuna salad), better with about half hard boiled eggs, lots of green onion tops.

Our local bakery, Franz has a Keto bread and now buns that is reasonable for us to have. Prior to that, their white whole wheat was my best choice. Only problem is it doesn't toast at all well, turns hard and crisp more like a cracker. It grills nicely though, either using mayo (on the outside to help toasting -- try it, it works) or butter/oil.

Of the things I miss most in my new way of eating is everything bagels. The 1/4 bagel I'm allowed only makes me want more, I'm better without.

Pimento cheese with a big ol' slice of homegrown tomato.

Iceblossom 08-10-2020 12:39 PM

Oh man, pimento cheese -- that's practically non-existent in my part of the world...

sewingpup 08-10-2020 03:38 PM

one of my favorites as a child was a homemade "bread and butter Pickle" sandwich....munny on home made bread and my mom's bread and butter pickles were the best.

I also like cold left over roast beef sandwiches with plain old ketchup and dill pickles.
grilled ham and cheese with mustard
egg salad on rye or marble rye
turkey, avocado, fresh tomato with miracle whip
peanut butter and banana toast is a go to
bumsters made with spam! grind spam, cheese, a little onion, and a dab of mustard together, spread open faced on a bun half, place under the broiler..until bubbly
sliced cucumbers go great on a lot of sandwiches for a little crunch.
I have been trying to cut out bread but will eat 7 grain bread when I can find it. Lately been using whole wheat or multigrain English muffins as bread...hard now that I am staying out of grocery stores as much as possible.

I put cheese on bread with any meat, wrap with foil and put in air fryer. Wonderful melty toasted sandwich. I have peanut butter and jelly with a glass of milk for supper many times.

SuzzyQ 08-10-2020 04:28 PM

Cheese plain or with onion or ham or summer sausage - toasted or plain
Toasted tomato - open face
salmon with dill pickles
egg salad (made with cottage cheese) with bread and butter pickles - on plain rice cakes
cottage cheese with green onion and black pepper and celery salt on plain rice cakes with bread and butter pickles
Ham Salad
Prefer rye bread
A lady at my church used to make triple decker fancy sandwiches with a cheddar cheese, egg salad, ham salad filling - so awesome! And I can't find a recipe for the cheese filling :(

Question for charley26 - you had both "egg mayonnaise" and "egg salad" on your list of favorite sandwiches. I thought egg mayonnaise was the English name for egg salad. Can you tell me please what each one is? Thanks!!!

Daffy Daphne 08-10-2020 07:13 PM

Bacon and tomato (summertime tomatoes)
Pineapple and cheddar cheese

I have only eaten at Subway once. I was with a group and that's where they chose to go eat lunch. I don't remember what kind of sandwich I had but remember the bread was good. I have never eaten there again though.

Mkotch 08-11-2020 02:46 AM

Swiss cheese with jam
Tuna melt on English muffin (with tomato and cheddar, put under the broiler until bubbly)

QuiltnNan 08-11-2020 03:31 AM

slice of fresh garden beefsteak tomato, Hellman's mayo, dash of salt on white bread. This is the only way I like to eat white bread.

Just 3 ingredients, Iceblossom. Sharp cheddar cheese, real mayonnaise and chopped pimentos. Better the next day. Needs to pull itself together and meld overnight in the fridge. Enjoy.

Grilled Cheese w/grilled mushrooms
Garbanzo bean salad (like tuna salad, but with beans instead)
PB&J

Everything bagel, toasted, scrambled egg (cooked in one layer and folded to fit bagel) and double bacon!

BLT with extra bacon!

Grilled cheese topped with apple butter...a childhood favorite.

I like tuna sandwich with relish. I know that isn't out of the ordinary but it taste real good to me when I get to fix it as my husband hates the smell of tuna so I don't get to have it often.

sewbizgirl 08-11-2020 10:11 AM

Jordan, ugh! My husband eats tuna fish every day for lunch, with rice and cottage cheese... no bread! He's a bodybuilder and this is his formula lunch, but boy do I get sick of the smell of tuna!

My favorite summer sandwich is a fried egg sandwich with a big ole slab of fresh sliced garden tomato. Some kind of cheese too, such as swiss if available.

Egg mayonnaise sandwich - some hard boiled eggs, finely chopped up with some chives, salt, pepper and mayonnaise to mix together, and then added between 2 slices of bread, or into a roll etc. Sometimes I add a finely chopped spring onion if the chives in the garden are not at their best. The chopped egg should not be too smashed up - there should be identifiable pieces of egg visible!

Egg salad sandwich - a sliced hard boiled egg, on some lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and a little spring onion, with a little mayonnaise, between 2 slices of fresh bread, or a fresh roll. There is a 'thing' that you place an egg on and press the other part, and you get perfect slices of egg.
Yummy.

redpurselady 08-11-2020 12:24 PM

Avocado, tomato, mushroom and muenster (or provolone) with mayo - nice light sandwich especially on hot days!

Yes! The only thing I do different is add some black pepper. Yum!

All time favorite....white bread, mayo, sprinkle of salt and lettuce. Yup...just a lettuce sandwich!

SusieQOH 08-12-2020 04:59 AM

I love sandwiches but don't seem to eat them much.
Grilled cheese is my fav followed by BLT but so many others!

There's a place in Cleveland that makes Reubens that rival anything in NYC. We will drive up there just for a Reuben. It's basically a hole in the wall that is always mobbed. Haven't been lately of course but they are fabulous.

bearisgray 08-12-2020 07:08 AM

Whole wheat toast (bakery type bread), butter, mayo, lettuce, tomato, bacon, and onion sandwiches.- we love them - even if they are fiddlyto make and messy to eat! We call them BLOTs.

Onebyone 08-12-2020 08:03 AM

I must be the only person who does not like whole wheat bread. The taste is terrible to me. I like sourdough, French, or plain white bread. I grew up eating homemade bread, store bread was considered not fit to eat. My grandmother called it full of junk that would make you puny. I was married before I bought a loaf of bread at the store and I was afraid to eat it but my husband liked it. I made and still make most of our bread. Now many bakeries have the quality bread with no added junk to make you puny. LOL

I am with you. I also don't like whole wheat pasta. I like lots of sandwiches but I am particular about some things. I like creamy peanut butter (not the healthy kind) on soft fresh white bread like Wonder bread, and lately with my daughter in law's homemade raspberry jam. I like tuna but with just a hint of mayo, also on soft fresh white bread. I like a grilled veggie panini if there is no aioli or mayo or anything slippery on it. I like a grilled cheese sandwich with nothing on it but the butter to grill it. I don't like ciabatta rolls - too hard. I don't like any meats I have to wrestle with to take a bite. I only like dijon mustard sparingly. Never put mayo on a sandwich. I have told my family never to get me a bread maker because soon enough I would be on my 600 pound life and someone would be taking a wall out of the house.

tropit 08-12-2020 03:24 PM

My mom used to tell me that during the depression, she would make herself a simple, tomato sandwich. Onion sandwiches too.

Open faced sandwiches, Scandinavian style. Good quality dark bread, sliced thin, butter spread to all edges. Sliced cheese, thin slices of pork roast, etc. Beautifully garnished. No two on a serving platter are alike.

Annaquilts 08-20-2020 02:21 AM

Melted tuna and American cheese on whole wheat bread. Open face.

https://www.schlotzskys.com/ Smoked turkey original on sour dough bread

at home: sliced smoked brisket with onion and mayo

I used to live on South Padre Island. My friend's restaurant served The Valley Delight, grilled with ham, cheese, and avocado. It was delightful!

We have something in this part of Illinois called a horseshoe sandwich. The gold standard is a hamburger served on toast and smothered in fries and cheese sauce, but there are all kinds of variations. You can put any kind of protein in place of the hamburger; I have seen everything from fish to italian beef, cold cuts, and even fried eggs. Any kind of potato can be used in place of the fries; tater tots, waffle fries, homemade chips, etc, and the true mark of a good horseshoe is how good the cheese sauce is. Some places make it spicy, some add beer, some use fancy cheeses. Some places even add a little bit of chili or another flavored sauce on top. A true indulgence, but amazing to eat.

My favorite regular sandwich is just a lettuce sandwich, when fresh lettuce comes in during the spring. A couple slices of toast or grainy german pumpernickel, spread thin with butter. Add a handful of lettuce fresh from the garden, a sprinkle of salt, and occasionally a smear of mustard. Best treat ever after a long winter.

Most people think this sandwich sounds gross but I LOVE it. Crunchy peanut butter, thick slice of fresh tomato from the garden, and a slab of sliced sweet onion preferably on toasted bread.

Fried egg sandwiches with sliced dill pickles and mayo.
Tomato and mayo sandwiches
Prosciutto, soft mozzarella cheese, and balsamic vinegar

I don't like whole wheat anything! Nor do I like sourdough.
Growing up we only ate Italian bread. We used to call white bread "American bread" LOL. Looking back now it seems funny but we weren't that far removed from our immigrant grandparents and of course, their customs.
