Floating Islands
I saw this dessert on British Baking Show and it's been on my mind! I think it will taste heavenly. I have never made it before. It's poached meringue in custard. Anyone ever made it? Eaten it?

I had this dessert at a black tie affair, dinner before the event. It was delicious, never had anything like it. I never thought to look up the recipe it seemed so far out of my cooking league. I have not seen it on any menu in years.

Used to have this dessert occasionally as a child; Mom made it for us. It wasn't until I had my Ancestry DNA done 2 years ago that I discovered how dramatically I am From Great Britain/Scotland that I realized how many parts of my life and vocabulary feature that link. Very strange indeed!

I had never heard of floating islands until I watched British Baking Show. Bet it tastes wonderful!

When I was in Paris they had something called "Floating Eggs" (at least that was the translation on the menu). It sounds like something similar. I was delicious!

That recipe did look good, be sure to show us a photo if you give it a try.

My mother used to make "floating islands" using applesauce and meringues. Hadn't thought of that in 70 years.

My mother used to make Floating Islands too. It always looked like an involved recipe, but they were exquisite. I never took the time to do it myself. Hers were meringue with custard inside.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/fl...nds_with_03517 2 recipes for you - they are delicious. |
Interestingly enough, my mom didn't make ours with any caramel; I never knew it was part of the dessert. SHE didn't like caramel.....probably burned it the few times she tried to make it and hated the flavor ever after! :p Thus were we denied. :( I adore it, in all incarnations!

Oh my, does sound delish....too involved for me to attempt...what is caster sugar? And I don't have vanilla beans in my pantry. But, if ever I go to a place that offers this on the menu, I will not hesitate to request it!
|
Caster sugar is fine grain sugar. If you put regular sugar in the food processor you can make your own.
|
I use vanilla bean paste. It's better then the liquid and more convenient then the vanilla bean. And then what do you do with the expensive bean. There is only so much vanilla sugar you can use. I give vanilla bean paste as a gift to my baking friends.

saw it in a movie;;
