I'd never heard of "fried green tomatoes" until the movie came out a few years ago. Since then I've learned to love them. I picked 3 green tomatoes off our vines and fried them for supper last night. I just dipped them in cornmeal mix and browned on both sides, then simmered until tender. They were delicious. Does anyone have other recipes for using green tomatoes?

I used to make Mock Raspberry Jam ALL the time...the boys loved it!

4 cups finely chopped green tomatoes
4 cups white sugar
1 (6 ounce) package raspberry flavored gelatin mix

1.Combine tomatoes and sugar in a large saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Stir and cook about 10 minutes. Add the gelatin, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 20 minutes.
2.Spoon into hot, sterilized jars and seal; or, pour into freezer containers and freeze.

A perfect day would be sewing/quilting all day, then eating a big plate of fried green tomatoes while watching "Fried Green Tomatoes".

I grew up eating fried green tomatoes. I will never forget the look on my DH (boyfriend at the time)face, when we told him what we were making for dinner. He said to me, that sounds gross. Ha ha ha..he now loves them as much as I do. His sister married my brother..same thing.. to this day we laugh about it. We just dip ours in eggs, and flour them and fry..and oh enjoy ever sooooooo much. My grandma and mom use to make green tomatoe jam also.

I dip mine in egg then flour, sometimes I do this several times before putting in a skillet. I also cook them in bacon grease. So fattening but oh so so good. Another tip; if you want green tomatoes all year long, this is what I do. I pick the tomatoes still green bring them in and wash them. I then proceed to slice them as if I am getting ready to cook them. Put them on a cookie sheet and put into the freezer. Once frozen take off cookie sheet and put into ziplock bags. When ready to fry some up, do not let the tomato thaw out, just take out of freezer and put into you flour (or what ever you are using to coat them) Put into the skillet and they taste just the same. I still have a couple of bags in the freezer I haven't ate yet. Might just go fry me up some for breakfast. YUM-YUM!

They are soooo good! My only problem is gertting enough bacon fat, since I am on a low salt diet, and the bacon is too salty, so I seldom cook it!

Here you go - Green Tomato Mincemeat

Grind 1 peck green tomatoes, drain off juice and add as much water as there was juice.
Add:
4 lbs. sugar
2 lbs. raisins
2 Tablespoons cloves
2 Tablespoons cinnamon
2 Tablespoons allspice
2 Tablespoons salt
1 cup vinegar (I use 1/2 vinegar & 1/2 water)
6 sour apples ground or finely chopped

Boil until thick and can in glass jars.

Also have recipe for Sweet Green Tomato Pickles if you are interested.

I do all you do BUT one thing..... I put them under the boiler!!
NO Grease..... I spray them with the butter spray[WM Brand with yellow lid] after I put them in the cornmeal....
I froze mine for yrs too...
I also do this to squash and zucchini.....

Linda King 06-02-2011 02:23 PM

I take the sliced green tomatoes and soak them in Buttermilk for 20 minutes then dip them in flour on both sides fry them in Canola Oil and/or Extra Virgin Olive Oil. They are yummy!! I will have to try freezing them, never done that.
