My Grammy used to make Roly Poly.. if i am even spelling it right... it is a dough you roll out like a big pie, sprinkle lots of sugar on it and spread blueberries on it, roll it up like a log, pinch it all closed, put it in a cheese cloth bag and tie it off and put in in boiling water and cook til it is done.. then let it set just a tad bit slice it like 1 1/2" to 2 inches think in a large soup bowl and pour milk or cream over it and more sugar if u like... that was our dinner! Oh man, I have to make it now!!! maybe next week.....

Sounds yummy! Could you bake it?

Sounds delightful! Some of the old "make do's" were so delicious. Grandmother used to take her left over pie dough and pat it out on a greased cookie sheet. Crimp an edge around on it, pour canned cream on it, sprinkle sugar, cinnamon, and dot it with butter. Baked until browned lightly. Take it out and let it sit for 5 or so min. It was flaky on the bottom and chewy on top. Yum! Mine is never quite as good but them I don't use leftover pastry,I make a whole batch just for this purpose. LOL

I sure would like the recipe (dough espcially) as my fraternal grandma used to make this, only she usede cherries. Not sure if they were fresh or the canned pie filling - too long ago to remember. She really didn't cook much that I remember but Cherry Roly Poly was something I do. Probably shouldn't have it at all with this darn diabetic thing but wouldn't mind trying maybe even a small one. Hope you (or someone) can come up with the dough recipe.
Thanks so much for that great rememberance! Sandy in Mooresville, NC |
she, your Grandma had to use fresh or it would of been a mess.. I am going to get the recipe for you. my sister just gave me a copy of it last month, as a suddle hint for me to make.. I will post it and I will email it to you !! PROMISE

this whole conversation is making my mouth water...

My Granny would make a suet crust; not healthy nowadays but one made with diced vegetable shortening would likely work. Her filling was raisins, currants, sugar. She would roll it up, wrap in butter-paper and steam. Sometimes she used apples and sugar...Yum, Yum! as my granddaughter would say!

Thank you so sew much! Not sure my family would take to this but I am sure mym siste would remember and perhaps her daughter and grandchildren would like it. No hurry. Just an FYI -m We are all from York, PA originally and grandma was born in Philly but her family came from NJ - not sure where this type of recipe would have originated - we're all almost pure German in heritage with a slight bit of Swiss thrown in for good measure! My grandmother made Pie Crust Cookies...delicious
Roll out the crust..sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar, dot with butter. Roll up and slice.(.look like pinwheels). Bake and enjoy. Flakey and delicious! |
my mom would roll out the piecrust, do the cinnamon and sugar thing, and then turn me loose with cookie cutters. we just baked 'em flat--and it only took a few minutes. to this day, i love them hot out of the oven, with cold milk. so do the grandkids!

Roly poly puds were always made with suet and either cooked in a "rag" with string attached to each end of the parcel---to enable a fork to be inserted under to get the hot pud from saucepan OR these can be put in a basin covered with grease proof paper ,pleated for expansion, and finally covered with sheeting, also with a pleat and string around top of basin , making a loop again to facilitate the getting out of bowl from boiling water in saucepan, this method does not get the suet part wet as the rag method does, and ALWAYS REMEMBER NEVER TO ALLOW PAN TO DRY OUT!!
If a recipe for suet pud is required am happy to print . |
I am coming over to eat with you guys! This sounds great!!!!

Good afternoon. My sister in law and I are searching for the recipe to the original German 'Roly Poly'. If any of you have that, we would greatly appreciate if you could send it to us. Our email address is located under our profile or if you could post it here. We both thank you in advance for any information you or anyone could provide us regarding finding the recipe.

My mom made her rolly Polly with a Bisquick dough. She made it as for biscuits just sprinkled the dough with sugar to her taste and added berries--usually blackberries! She just folded the dough up over the berries and baked. Then we would eat it for supper with milk poured over it.Oh,does that sound good! Thanks for the memories that you made me think of!
