Halloween Cake?

OK...let me say right off the bat...I'm not good a decorating cakes. I just like to make good tasting cakes, so I'm not looking for "Jack-o-lantern" cakes, or "witch's hat" cakes. Like my handwriting, my decorating skills are absolutely pathetic.

That being said, got any good recipes for cakes that depict Halloween, or Fall?

Thank you for these clever ideas! None of them are too exacting when it comes to decorating them. These are all doable for me. :)

Bake two bundt cakes. Put one on top of the other and frost it with orange frosting. Instant pumpkin cake. I learned this in a cake decorating school decades ago It was three months of classes only for decorating, not learning how to bake etc. I got a certificate to be a licensed cake decorator. LOL Never used it for a job though. Several members opened a bakery and had good success and a few did wedding cakes for caterers. When we were learning how to pipe and decorate, we used styrofoam cake. We could scrip off the mistakes and start over.

Pumpkin Spice Bundt cake with cream cheese frosting. Nuts on top and in the cake. It's my go to for pot lucks this time of year. No specific recipe. I have to look one up every year. No really decorated but sort of fallish.

When my kids were little, I had two booklets full of cut-up cakes. Bake a cake, cut it up and cover the whole thing with mountain frosting made in the double boiler. Divide the frosting and tint portions first, then use coconut and other additions to trim. They have all looked fantastic. Here's a link to instructions on making the witch. It starts with a single 9" square cake.

Well, sort of instructions. This cook is using buttercream and icing bag, but you can easily use frosting.

Barbara, that witch is cute!

So...here is the cake that I've decided to do. It looks fancy, but is actually pretty easy and the techniques can hide a multitude of sins. I made 3, simple, 6 inch, chocolate cake layers and I'm going to fill it with peanut butter frosting.

I like the fact that I don't have to pipe the spiderweb, but can just etch it into the dark layer of frosting to reveal the white layer beneath it. I'm terrible at piping and using a skewer to draw with seems much easier. If I make a mistake, I can just patch it with some dark buttercream.

I'm making gumdrop/jelly spiders. I didn't have any gumdrops and didn't want to buy any, so I made up some firm jelly out of agar agar, sugar, water and black food coloring. They're coming out good, so far! The legs will be piped onto the bodies.

I'll let you know how it turns out. :)

So, the cake was a hit! It turned out pretty good...not pro, but good 'nuff. I added a steak knife stuck into the top of the cake, with jelly blood squirting out. That is what everyone loved. (I'll post pix later.) My dau's cat jumped up on the table and licked some of the frosting off the top of the cake while we were having puu puus. That took a little of the charm off of the cake. :( Still, everone loved it. The cake was made with Cacao powder, instead of Cocoa powder, which gave it a milder, chocolate flavor. I put a spiced buttercream in between the layers. It was a nice combo. In the end the cake looked heavy and dark, but it was actually very light and fluffy and not too sweet.
