ham loaf?
I wish I had my grandmother's recipe for ham loaf. It was the best I've ever tasted. I think it was a mix of ham, beef and pork ground together. That was back in the era when the butcher would mix that especially for her. Does anyone have a favorite ham loaf recipe to share, please?

I haven't made that for many years, but I didn't have a recipe. I think I just mixed ground ham and ground pork, then made it just like meatloaf. It was very good.

Ham Balls (this can be made into ham loaf & eliminate the sauce)
3 lbs ground ham 2 lbs ground pork 2 cups quick oatmeal 2 cups milk 1 egg Mix above ( I use my Kitchen Aid - low speed to combine ). Make ham balls whatever size - I use a metal meatball scoop (very old) or about 1/4 cup. Place on lightly greased sheet pans. In saucepan combine: 1 cup white or cider vinegar, 3 cups brown sugar (I use less or about 2 cups), 1 cup water, 2 Tblsp prepared mustard (I double it). Heat to dissolve sugar but don’t boil. Pour over ham balls & bake 90 minutes at 350 degrees. Its a restaurant recipe so it makes lots so I can freeze some. Our little neighborhood grocery has ham loaf mixture for sale every day so I use that. |
I Love ham loaf; not here of here in TX sadly. But I did ask the butcher where my mom got it what the mix was. 3/4 part ground ham to 1/4 part ground pork then mix it up like you'd make your favorite meat loaf. My mom always made that for me when I would go home (Ohio). Sadly both parents are no longer with us. But probably my favorite home comfort food.

I saw this post the other day and having absolutely no experience with ham loaf or ham balls, did not respond but was interested enough to follow and see what was posted. Always on the look out for something new to try.
Imagine my surprise when I received an email from Clemson University's Home and Garden extension service (I signed up for the service and get an email once a week) that had a recipe for Ham Balls in it! Thought I would share a link to the website and definitely going to make some Ham Balls soon. Especially since this recipe only calls for 1 pound ham and is very similiar to the one posted by tranum. https://hgic.clemson.edu/easter-ham-...weekly-updates |
Isn't it funny the serendipitous coincidences that happen? Sounds like ham balls are meant to be in your life!
