This is a cake recipe that my sister used to make for me. Her house burned down a long time ago and she lost the recipe, we cannot find it anywhere
It is a red cake that I remember had a whole thing of red food coloring in it. Here is the tricky part. I remember the icing had 1 cup of crisco and coconut. I know it sounds weird but it was wonderful. |
Sounds like a type of Red Devil cake. I have never made one and hope you have good luck finding it.
|
The cake part sounds like Red Velvet Cake - made with a chocolate cake.
Don't know about the icing. Try allrecipes.com. Near the top is an 'ingredient' search. Put in crisco and coconut and/or whatever else you think when it in. |
Try http://www.crisco.com for the frosting recipe.

Our family calls this $200 Waldorf Astoria Cake as the recipe came from that hotel and when a lady asked for the recipe it was sent to her with a bill for $200. she raised the $$ to pay for the $200 by selling copies of the recipe. Our frosting did not have coconut in it but it was made by cooking a kind of "paste", cooling it and then whipping it for a long time...My Mom colored the frosting green to go with the red of the cake for a Christmas dessert. I have never made it.. just enjoying the memories of eating it each year.

I'm bookmarking to try later... not now though... too much indulgence over the holidays. DH will love this one!

Arty1- Thanks for the recipe- I once had that icing recipe, and have looked for it over and over (in my messy recipe collection), and am so glad to see it! It was the best icing I ever had at the time- Think I'll make a box cake and try it out again! (Heck with all that red food coloring!)

I've made this recipe for Red Velvet Cake since 1964 & its one of my favorites but follow directions closely.
Red Velvet Cake Cream together 1 1/2 cups sugar, 1/2 cup shortening. Cream about 5 - 10 minutes. Add 2 whole eggs, two 1/2 oz. bottles red food coloring & 1 tsp. vanilla. In another bowl sift together: 1/2 tsp. salt, 2 Tbsp. cocoa, 2 cups flour. Add a little at a time to the creamed mixture, alternately with 1 cup buttermilk.. Mix in 1 tsp. baking soda & 2 Tbsp. vinegar (This causes a reaction that's fun to watch) Divide into 3 greased & floured round cake pans (I also line the bottom with waxed paper). Bake for 25-30 minutes at 350 degrees. Icing: 1 1/2 cups milk 1/4 cup flour Cook until a paste forms. Remove from heat & let cool. Cream together 1 cup granualted sugar, 1 cup shortening. Add 1 tsp. salt, 1/2 tsp. vanilla. Add this mixture to the paste mixture, beating until smooth. Frost cake & sprinle sides & top with coconut. |
THANKS ARTY1 FOR THE RECIPE. SOUNDS WONDERFUL.

Duncan Hines makes a great red velvet box cake mix. I use that and make the homemade cooked icing.
