I've been cooking dry beans in my slow cooker for 10 hrs., making baked beans. I haven't used dry beans in a few years so decided to try them again. I soaked them overnight and they've cooked in my sauce all day, they are as hard as they were this morning! What is the problem? Do beans go bad and not cook right? At this point we'll be having tonights dinner tomorrow night.

I have cooked dried beans for years and have never had this happen. It is possible that they are bad, sorry to say. Most beans will cook in a slow cooker in 6 to 8 hours. Silly question, did the water in the slow cooker get hot?

Could your sauce maybe have been too thick, not enough moisture for the beans to absorb?

Actually I think the sauce is to thin and the cooker is very hot. I've cooked beans in the past, but have never had this happen, do dry beans go bad in the package? Maybe tomorrow I should strain them out of the sauce, toss them and put different ones in. I don't want to discard the sauce from the 7qt. cooker, that's a lot of sauce.

Just put them in a pot and slow boil and cover with a vent. they should be done in about 1 1/2 hours..

Maybe you should cook the beans before adding sauce. I think the beans needed more liquid. A pinch of baking soda helps tenderize beans, add while cooking. Did the beans soak up all the water they were soaking in? Could have needed more water.
What kind of sauce did you make? Always looking for different meal ideas.

Did you soak them overnight before you cooked them? Sorry just read your entire post. No idea why they are doing that.

I did soak them overnight, but they didn't soak up the water as usual. which had me a bit concerned.

The sauce is a mix of bbq sauce, ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, water & chopped onion.
